We’re a little over two weeks away from when Apple will open pre-orders for its exciting new iPhone Duo, and a new report out of Apple’s Chinese supply chain is giving us some insight into exactly why the availability of the company’s first foldable had to be pushed back into October.

Apple certainly didn’t make this decision lightly, and contrary to what some have suggested, it’s not about creating more marketing hype to build up anticipation. After all, Apple’s fiscal quarter ends tomorrow, so releasing a product in October has an actual tangible impact on the company’s financials.

The most plausible reason for the delay of the iPhone Duo is simply that Apple can’t make them fast enough — and it appears it may still be struggling to do so.

This isn’t exactly news to anyone who’s been following the rumor mill. Reputable analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo were suggesting that Apple’s foldable iPhone would face launch delays as far back as December 2025, saying “smooth shipments may not occur until 2027.”

This was amplified throughout 2026, with a May report on hinge and circuit board bottlenecks. While some speculated that Apple might actually delay the announcement, the consensus was that we’d see a September unveiling (which we obviously did), but that it might follow the iPhone X playbook with a release date pushed even further away into November.

In the end, Apple seemingly split the difference. The iPhone Duo goes on sale on October 23, which is better than the iPhone X, which arrived on November 3, 2017, or even the iPhone 12 Pro Max (and iPhone 12 mini), which didn’t even go up for pre-order until November 6, 2020, with availability on November 13, 2020.

However, a new report from China’s Jiemian News suggests Apple may not be out of the woods yet. While Apple isn’t about to change its availability dates — you’ll still be able to place your order on October 16, as promised — you might want to make sure you’re at the front of the line, as there’s a good chance these are going to go fast.

In other words, Kuo’s late 2025 prediction may have turned out to be prescient:

Development of the foldable iPhone is behind earlier expectations, but the product is still expected to announce in 2H26. Due to early-stage yield and ramp-up challenges, smooth shipments may not occur until 2027. With limited supply and expected strong demand, the foldable iPhone could be facing shortages until at least the end of 2026.

According to Jiemian News, Apple is still in “ramp-up” mode even now, making only 60% of the iPhone Duo units it’s ultimately slated to produce. It’s expected to take at least six months before yields reach a “mature” level.

The report suggests that Apple might decide to loosen the quality requirements to help speed things up, but the real issue is that the production line “needs to be debugged while producing.” The iPhone Duo is an exceedingly complex device, and this really is Apple’s first rodeo when it comes to mass-producing foldables, which face unique challenges with screens and hinges.

Apple’s exacting quality standards are generally a good thing — I think we can all agree that a $2,000 iPhone had better have near-perfect build quality — but they’re also slowing things down.

The supply chain is now waiting for Apple to make a decision on whether to relax the quality requirements. If the quality requirements are relaxed, it will be possible to move towards mass production more quickly.

Jiemian News

Analysts have varied on how many iPhone Duo units Apple is aiming to produce for 2026, since that’s obviously not something Apple itself is sharing. Early supply chain reports in the spring said Apple had ordered between 7 and 8 million units for sale before the end of the year. By July that estimate had been bumped to 10 million. However, an industry insider told Jiemian News that the target for the iPhone Duo is now approximately 6 to 8 million, putting us back at the original number.

By contrast, Apple is likely producing 20 to 30 million units each of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but it’s also fair to say those will sell much better than the first-generation foldable, which carries a $2,000 starting price that will be hard for many to swallow in today’s economy.

Prepare Your Pre-Order on October 12

Still, the iPhone Duo is generating a lot of buzz, and while it’s a sea of compromises right now — you’re getting only a dual-camera system and you’ll be forced to use Touch ID for everything from unlocking it to opening apps and autofilling passwords — it’s also undeniably cool.

That’s going to create a fair bit of demand, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see shipping dates pushed back quickly, especially for the lower-capacity models. You’ll probably find it easier to get your hands on one if you’re willing to pay the price of a higher-end MacBook Pro for the 2 TB model, but either way, it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead.

As we saw with the iPhone 18 Pro models earlier this month, you’ll be able to queue up your pre-order a few days early, and Apple has quietly updated its iPhone Duo purchasing page to let folks know they’ll be able to get a head start on the Monday of that week.

“Come back on 10.12 to get ready for pre-order,” Apple’s page says in all of the major markets where the iPhone Duo is slated to launch next month. That’s Thanksgiving in Canada (and Columbus Day in the US), but it matters little, as Apple Stores don’t need to be open for this; it’s strictly the day the website will let you begin making your selections and saving them in a shopping cart.

If the process is anything like it’s been in the past, you’ll be able to visit the purchasing page and go through almost the entire process of selecting your iPhone Duo right up to the point of hitting the “Buy” button. That means choosing your preferred capacity and color, selecting a trade-in and arranging financing through Apple Upgrade, Affirm, or any other available financing partners, depending on which country you’re in, selecting your payment and carrier options in advance, and even choosing any accessories or an AppleCare+ plan.

At the bottom, you’ll see a “Get ready for pre-order” button instead of the usual purchasing button, which will take care of pre-approving any financing options and saving everything in your Apple Account so it’s ready to go when the actual pre-orders open.

This process won’t “reserve” an iPhone Duo for you — you’ll still have to wake up early to complete the purchase, but if you’ve gone through these steps earlier in the week, the final checkout typically takes less than 30 seconds, mostly requiring you to choose your shipping or in-store pickup option and confirm everything.

It’s definitely a faster way to go, and if you live in a major urban center, you might even have better luck opting for in-store pickup, as those come out of stock already earmarked for in-store sales, meaning they’re a separate inventory pool from those sitting in warehouses preparing to be shipped out via UPS or FedEx.
