In this week’s edition: A deputy gets in trouble for taking nude photos of prisoners with his iPhone, an iPad-stealing porch pirate makes his getaway in a surprising vehicle, and a police officer’s stolen iPhone leads authorities to a huge cache of stolen Apple products.
Sheriff’s Deputy Allegedly Taking, Sharing Nude Photos of Suspects on His iPhone
Bucks County Deputy Sheriff Ryan Gaffney was formally charged in late July with secretly using his iPhone to photograph naked prisoners while in custody, sharing those images with co-workers and personal contacts, and then lying to investigators about his actions, the Bucks County District Attorney’s office has announced.
Gaffney, who was terminated from the Sheriff’s Office in June, was charged with official oppression, unsworn falsification to authorities, possessing an instrument of crime, and obstructing the administration of law or other government function. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday, August 10.
The images were uncovered on Gaffney’s iPhone during a court-ordered forensic search of the former deputy’s devices.
Officials say that during one incident where Gaffney and other deputies arrived on the scene to make an arrest, he covered his own body camera.
Luckily, “the body camera of another deputy in the room captured footage of [the deputy] removing his right glove, pulling out his personal cellphone, opening the camera application, and pointing the camera lens directly at the male.”
iPad Porch Pirate Flees in a Mercedes
Suffolk Police are searching for a man who they say stole an iPad delivery from a porch in Centereach, Long Island, making his escape in a surprisingly fancy getaway car.
According to Bronx News 12, a parcel containing an iPad valued at $350 was grabbed on June 12 by a man in an orange hoodie, who fled in a black Mercedes-Benz. The luxury grab and run was captured on a security camera.
Anyone with information is urged to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers to submit an anonymous tip at 1-800-220-TIPS. There is a cash reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
Large Cache of Stolen iPhones Recovered in Uganda
While tracing a stolen iPhone belonging to a police officer in Kampala, Uganda, law enforcement officials discovered a large cache of stolen iPhones and other Apple products.
The operation began after a police officer’s mobile phone was stolen on July 16, 2026, while he was on duty at Top City Plaza in Kisenyi Cell. Pulse reports that investigators “traced the phone to an alleged network dealing in suspected stolen iPhones and spare parts.” The man arrested for stealing the phone, Richard Mugabi, admitted that he had stolen the officer’s phone while the officer was resting inside a vehicle, then sold it to a mobile phone shop.
Searches of the shop, as well as the owner’s vehicle, uncovered more than a hundred stolen iPhones, as well as iPads, laptops, and iPhone spare parts.
Police have recovered 120 suspected stolen iPhones and arrested four suspects identified as Richard Mugabi, Frank Mwesigwa, Sumaya Mutesi, and Juma Mugerwa.
“We have recovered 120 suspected stolen iPhones and arrested four suspects in connection with the possession and dealing of the suspected stolen devices. Investigations are ongoing to establish the rightful owners of the recovered devices, identify other members of the criminal network and ensure all those involved face justice,” police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said.
Man Accused of Dragging a Cop Disconnects iPad During Virtual Hearing
A New Hampshire man who has been accused of dragging a police officer during a June traffic stop in Massachusetts made a virtual appearance in court from his jail cell via an iPad. However, when the hearing began to look like it wasn’t going the defendant’s way, he “started yelling, grabbed the iPad, and disconnected from the call,” reports WHDH.
Hector Rivera, 34, of Plaistow, New Hampshire, allegedly struck and dragged a Lawrence police officer with a vehicle during a traffic stop in Lawrence. He is charged with several crimes, including assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, aggravated assault and battery, failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. Rivera also has two additional warrants out on him for violating an abuse prevention order.
Rivera at first refused to participate in the hearing at all, choosing to simply stay in his bed in jail. However, while the prosecutor was talking about his criminal history, Rivera began yelling, grabbed the iPad, and disconnected from the call.
Prosecutors say the officer remains in serious condition at a Boston hospital.
