Even though Apple’s most popular product is still the iPhone, where the company really shines is in how all of its products work together. You start with an iPhone, then maybe add a Mac, and suddenly, you can do things that feel magical. For instance, you can immediately transfer files between devices, or copy something on your Mac and paste it on your iPhone without any extra steps — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Still, there’s one tiny problem for most of us: the price.

For a long time, becoming part of the Apple ecosystem usually meant spending a lot of money. Buying one device was easy; getting two or more became really expensive for those of us on a budget.

Luckily, things are more different than they’ve ever been. Apple now has a few lower-cost products that make the entry point much less painful, especially if your goal is not to buy Apple’s best gear, but to buy the cheapest setup that still gives you access to the real Apple ecosystem.

If you’re looking for the most affordable way to get into Apple’s entire ecosystem, here’s the setup that makes the most sense right now.

MacBook Neo: The Most Affordable Mac You Can Buy

The MacBook Neo is the starting point because you really need both an iPhone and a Mac to make the Apple ecosystem feel complete. And right now, the Neo is the cheapest way to get into macOS with a brand-new Apple machine.

Starting at $599, it does something Apple hasn’t really done in years — it makes buying a new MacBook feel possible for people who would normally shop for a refurbished Mac. That means you can get the full macOS experience without spending over $1,000 for a new Mac.

The Neo is also easy to recommend because it’s a complete computer. You get the display, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, webcam, battery, and charger in one purchase, which isn’t the case with Apple’s other budget computer, the Mac mini

For the kind of user this machine is aimed at, it does more than enough. The A18 Pro chip isn’t trying to replace a MacBook Pro or even a more capable MacBook Air. But it’s got power to spare for browsing, taking video calls, streaming Netflix, light work, and general everyday tasks. After all, even iPhone 15 Pro which used an older A17 Pro chip can handle AAA console games and the 2020 iPhone 12 could capture and edit 4K video in Dolby Vision HDR with its A14 chip.

That said, there are some genuine trade-offs that you’ll feel if you’re more of a power user. The 8 GB of RAM means it’s not the kind of laptop you’ll buy for doing demanding work, especially if you want it to last over several years. It also only comes with two USB-C ports, and only one of them is a faster USB 3 port, which matters if you use a lot of accessories.

If your workload includes heavier video editing, 3D rendering, or complex coding, you’ll likely be pushing the MacBook Neo to its limits. It’s also not an ideal Mac for creatives who need the best color accuracy, as it lacks the True Tone display and P3 color gamut that’s been standard on every other MacBook since 2019.

Still, if your goal is to buy the cheapest real MacBook possible and use it for normal life, the Neo is the clear answer.

iPhone 17e Is Perfect for People on a Budget

If the MacBook Neo is the cheapest way into macOS, the iPhone 17e is the most affordable iPhone that’s also completely modern.

Apple has had lower-cost iPhones before, but they often felt like the version you bought but didn’t really want. The iPhone 17e is different because it covers all the basics. It starts at $599, comes with 256 GB of storage, uses the newest A19 chip, supports Apple Intelligence, includes USB-C and MagSafe, and still gives you the features that most people actually care about.

That makes it the strongest entry point into the iPhone side of the ecosystem. You still get all the perks that come with having an iPhone. And because the phone starts with 256 GB of storage, you shouldn’t have any real issues with storage — at least in the near future.

The drawbacks are still there, though. You are not getting the more premium display experience of the regular iPhone 17. You also still get a single-lens camera system, and while it’s a very good camera, it won’t give you the most flexibility when taking pictures.

But for a cheapest-possible ecosystem setup, the 17e is exactly the right choice. It gives you the full iPhone experience where it counts, without forcing you to spend more just to feel like you have a premium phone.

The Base AirPods Are Affordable and Give You Great Sound Quality

Glowtime AirPods 7

Let’s start by saying that you can absolutely be part of the Apple ecosystem without AirPods, but once you add them, you start enjoying one of the best experiences Apple has to offer.

You pair them once with your iPhone, and they can move across your Apple devices thanks to iCloud and your Apple Account. That means you can start listening on your iPhone, then switch to your Mac without going through a lot of annoying extra steps. It’s one of those little things that feels silly until you get used to it, and then it feels hard to live without.

If you’re trying to keep the cost as low as possible, the cheapest realistic Apple audio option is the base AirPods 4. We’re talking about the AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation, which start at $129, but if you can, you should probably get the AirPods 4 with ANC for $179. Either one you choose will give you great sound quality and other awesome perks.

For instance, you get quick pairing, fast device switching, and a cleaner overall experience than you usually can’t get with third-party earbuds inside the Apple ecosystem. The audio quality is perfectly fine for music, calls, podcasts, and everyday use.

Of course, this is also where the budget setup shows its limits. If you care deeply about sound quality or active noise cancellation, the cheapest AirPods are not the best buy in Apple’s own lineup. AirPods Pro are clearly better, but they are also over $100 more expensive.

Optional: The Apple Watch SE Adds a Lot to the Ecosystem

You don’t need an Apple Watch to be part of the Apple ecosystem. If you are trying to keep costs down as much as possible, the watch is the first thing you can leave out. But it’s also a great accessory that adds a significant extra layer once you can afford it.

That’s where the Apple Watch SE 3 comes in. At $249, it is not cheap by any means, but it’s still much cheaper than Apple’s flagship Apple Watch Series 11, and it gives you most of what people actually buy the Apple Watch for.

You still get notifications, calls, fitness and sleep tracking, workout data, safety features, and complete iPhone integration. Plus, the SE 3 now comes with some awesome premium features like the Always-On display, temperature sensing, and sleep apnea notifications. Overall, the Apple Watch SE delivers a lot more than many people expect.

But just like the other options, you’ll have to accept a few trade-offs. The Apple Watch SE doesn’t include the more advanced health features you get on higher-end models. That means that if you want your Apple Watch to help detect Hypertension for you or take ECG readings, you’ll need the Apple Watch Series 11. If that’s a minor concern, then you won’t miss it. But if you’re someone who suffers from high blood pressure or heart issues, you might want to spend a bit more money.

With all that said, if your budget can afford it, the Apple Watch SE 3 offers a lot of value for relatively little price, at least by Apple standards.

Optional: iCloud+ Is What Makes The Whole Thing Feel Connected

This is something really optional, but it’s also what makes the entire Apple ecosystem work like magic.

Technically, you can use the free iCloud tier. However, that’s not realistic for most people. You only get 5 GB of free storage, which disappears fast and won’t be nearly enough to back up your iPhone.

That’s why the 50 GB iCloud+ plan at $0.99 per month is such a useful upgrade. It is one of the cheapest recurring subscriptions Apple offers, and it arguably does more to make the ecosystem feel like one connected system than almost anything else.

Sure, it’s still only 50 GB, so you’ll probably have to manage it constantly. But once you start using it, all your Apple devices start working together in a unique way. Photos appear across devices. Notes, messages, passwords, and files stay in sync. Backups happen quietly in the background. And you also get privacy perks like Private Relay and Hide My Email, which make the subscription feel like more than just cloud storage.

That’s why, if you really want the Apple ecosystem experience people talk about, you should probably consider iCloud+. Without it, your devices still work together, but they won’t feel as connected.

And the Grand Total Is…

If you keep this to the true minimum while still trying to get the full ecosystem experience, this is what you’ll have to spend:

  • MacBook Neo: $599.
  • iPhone 17e: $599.
  • Base AirPods: about $129.

That puts the minimum realistic total at $1,327 before tax. Now, if you want to add the optional but very worthwhile extras, the number changes like this:

  • Apple Watch SE: $249.
  • iCloud+: $0.99 per month.

That brings the more complete ecosystem total to $1,576 plus the ongoing iCloud+ subscription.

Is it cheap? Not really, but it is cheaper than the full Apple ecosystem. $1,576 won’t even buy you a 14-inch MacBook Pro, but it will give you access to a complete Apple setup that will last you for years.

With that said, Apple is still Apple, and they won’t make things all that cheap. But the important thing to notice is that, for the first time in forever, you can finally be part of the entire Apple ecosystem without selling a kidney. And compared to what this would have cost a few years ago, it’s a huge change.

Of course, you don’t have to buy everything at once; most of us couldn’t afford it. But now you know which are the cheapest, most modern devices you can buy. They’re not the best, but they’ll work like a charm for most users.
