This week, Google officially released four new Pixel 10 phones, the Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a at a star-studded event in Brooklyn, New York. Hosted by late-night star Jimmy Fallon, the event also featured appearances from podcast host Alex Cooper, F1 driver Lando Norris, singer Nick Jonas, and NBA superstar Steph Curry.
The new Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are packed with AI features. The announcement of these models comes on the heels of a Google marketing campaign in which they relentlessly mocked Apple for its unexpected Siri delay. In the teaser for the Pixel 10 released a couple of weeks ago, Google takes a jab at Apple, stating, “If you buy a new phone because of a feature that’s coming soon…But it’s been coming soon for a full year…You could change your definition of soon.”
In a final twist of the knife, the video concludes with the instrumental version of Dr. Dre’s The Next Episode. As you may know, Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones brand was acquired by Apple for $3 billion in 2014.
The release date for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and Pro XL is August 22, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will come in October. All phones are currently available for pre-order, and pricing starts at $799 for the Pixel 10, $999 for the Pixel 10 Pro, $1,199 for the Pro XL, and $1,799 for the 10 Pro Fold.
Google is packing the Pixel 10 models with AI features, hoping to capitalize on Apple’s Siri blunder. New AI integrations include a tool called “Camera Coach” that suggests the best framing and lighting angle for a picture, “Magic Cue,” which is designed to anticipate a user’s needs, and Voice Translation, which can translate a call in real-time while mimicking the speaker’s voice. For photography enthusiasts, the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL cameras feature up to 100x “Pro Res Zoom,” utilizing AI to add or enhance detail in extreme digital zoom shots.
In addition to the Pixel 10 lineup, Google also released the Pixel Watch 4, which is completely redesigned inside and out and is the first smartwatch to include standalone Satellite Communication for safety. It also remains the only smartwatch capable of detecting a loss of pulse, a feature Google introduced on the Pixel Watch 3 earlier this year. The Pixel Watch 4 is also scheduled for an October 9 release date and will start at $349.
The Google Pixel Buds 2a earbuds start at $129 and are available beginning October 9. They include active noise cancellation, battery life in excess of 24 hours, and AI features like compatibility with Google’s Gemini AI assistant.
Google’s revelation of this new lineup ahead of the iPhone 17’s official launch was clearly calculated and may prove to be a solid strategy. For some, these new features may be enough to justify the leap to a new smartphone brand. Whether or not you’re an Apple loyalist, other phone makers have a leg up when it comes to AI — at least for the time being. Will the iPhone 17 steal the show back from Google? We’ll see.
