The iPhone 6s is currently the world’s most popular smartphone, according to multiple market research reports. Apple sold an estimated 14.2 million units worldwide in the second quarter of 2016, according to a report from research firm Strategy Analytics. The iPhone 6 placed second with an estimated 8.5 million shipments, the report added.
“The iPhone 6s is wildly popular is dozens of countries globally, due to its attractive hardware design blended with rich features such as 4K video, large multi-touch display and fingerprint security,” said Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics’s Executive Director.
Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge ended up in second place with 8.3 million shipments worldwide, according to MacRumors. The Strategy Analytics report also stated that the iPhone 6s is “currently the world’s top selling smartphone,” hinting that it has remained the biggest seller well into 2016’s third quarter — leading up to the release of Apple’s iPhone 7.
The data is supported by another report released by London-based market research company Kantar, which also placed the iPhone 6s as the world’s most popular and best-selling smartphone, according to 9to5Mac.
When it comes to the U.S. market, the iPhone 6s still reigns supreme, making up 11 percent of US smartphone sales. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 is close behind, with 9 percent of the total market share, Kantar reported. Kantar’s U.S. market data also shows that the iPhone 6, which is an older phone reaching the end of its lifecycle, is currently the sixth most popular phone in the U.S.
Furthermore, the iPhone SE — the smaller cousin to Apple’s other flagship devices — continues to sell well, according to 9to5Mac. The iPhone SE is the third best-selling phone in the US, making up 5 percent of all smartphone sales — possibly due to its smaller, more pocketable size, as well as its advanced capabilities and low price-point.
Kantar also reported that 29 percent of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus owners plan to upgrade to the iPhone 7 this year, which is slated to have features such as a dual-lens camera setup and increased storage capacity.
