If you’ve been having trouble with Apple’s new iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, or macOS Sequoia releases, you may want to head over to your device’s Software Updates, as Apple has just pushed out a series of sub-point releases to address all the niggling little issues folks have found thus far.

No, this isn’t the big iOS 18.1 release that will bring Apple Intelligence to your iPhone 16 (and iPhone 15 Pro), although that’s still expected to arrive by the end of this month, likely with its own set of new bugs that will need to be addressed in iOS 18.1.1.

In the meantime, Apple has released iOS and iPadOS 18.0.1 (build 22R361), macOS 15.0.1, and watchOS 11.0.1 (build 22R361). There’s also a visionOS 2.0.1 update for folks with an Apple Vision Pro.

The most significant among these is iPadOS 18.0.1, which returns Apple’s iPadOS 18 update to the M4 iPad Pro after it was pulled a few weeks ago amidst complaints of bricked tablets. While that problem only affected a small number of iPads, it was widespread enough that Apple didn’t want to take any risks. If you’re an M4 iPad Pro user fortunate enough to miss the earlier update, iPadOS 18.0.1 should be safe to install now.

According to Apple’s release notes, other fixes in iOS and iPadOS 18.0.1 address performance issues on some iPhone and iPad models due to improper memory allocation and crashes in the Messages app that were triggered by replying to a message with a shared Apple Watch face.

Meanwhile, iOS 18.0.1 also addresses the touchscreen problems we reported on last week. However, the release notes for this only mention the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, so it’s unclear if those models were indeed the crux of the problem or if there’s still something Apple needs to do for older devices.

This update provides important bug fixes and security updates for your iPhone including:

– Touch screen may be temporarily unresponsive in certain circumstances on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models
– Camera may freeze when recording macro mode video on the Ultra Wide camera in 4K with HDR turned off on iPhone 16 Pro models
– Messages may unexpectedly quit when replying to a message with a shared Apple Watch face.
– Performance may be impacted due to an issue with memory allocation on some iPhone models.

Another slightly more obscure problem is fixed in iOS 18.0.1, where the camera freezes while recording macro mode video in 4K with HDR turned off on the iPhone 16 Pro.

For Apple Watch users, watchOS 11.0.1 fixes several issues related to unexpected restarts, battery drain, the Music app, and unresponsive touch screens on the latest Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 models.

The macOS Sequoia 15.0.1 release should please users and developers of third-party security tools. Apple notes that it “improves compatibility with third-party security software.” We hope that means it fixes the security software problems we reported on last month.

None of these releases appear to address any security issues, which is a good thing as it means there are no iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch vulnerabilities that need to be patched — at least none that have been discovered yet.

Update (Oct 4, 2024): Apple updated its release notes following the initial release of iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1, listing two important security fixes related to audio recordings in Messages and Passwords.

All of the latest updates can be installed in the usual manner: by visiting the Software Updates section in the iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or Apple Watch Settings apps, checking for updates, and proceeding from there.
