Several New Apps Added to Apple TV

Amid rumors of a pending release of the next-generation Apple TV, complete with Siri and home automation support, an App Store, and a subscription TV service, Apple has added several new apps to the current generation Apple TV.
Users of Apple’s set top box were greeted this morning with three new apps immediately available for viewing – TED, Tastemade, and Young Hollywood.
The TED channel brings over 1,900 lectures from TED Talks directly to your television screen. Featuring speakers such as Bill Clinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Al Gore, Bill Gates, several Nobel Prize winners and more, TED Talks offers free presentations in a variety of different categories. The app allows you to sync with your phone or tablet via an existing TED account, and users can browse for new videos by category, or by pre-made sets of playlists.
Tastemade is described as “the first 100% digital food and travel lifestyle network.” Featuring cooking and culinary shows, Tastemade’s content typically centers on cuisine from a specific geographic location. For example, the first block of content available from the channel “celebrates all the great food and travel destinations around Austin, Texas.”
Finally Young Hollywood, with a large library of celebrity-based content, will debut seven original half-hour shows on the Apple TV this month. In addition to interviews and their popular entertainment news show, Young Hollywood Now, they are planning on adding shows spanning several genres (reality TV, documentaries, scripted shows, etc) to their lineup.
With the set top’s recent price drop from $99 to $69 and the addition of these new apps to the lineup, as well as the Apple TV-exclusive launch of HBO now in April, it’s clear that Apple is putting increased focus on the television experience. Apple is expected to introduce a new Apple TV at the WWDC in June, featuring a very exciting set of new features. Until the announcement of the next generation of the Apple TV, users will have to settle for new content.
