Apple on Tuesday unleashed the second beta build of iOS 12 (beta 2), in addition to new beta releases for watchOS 5, tvOS 12 and macOS Mojave 10.14, to registered software developers — the most infamous of whom wasted not a second of time digging into the new OS code for any sign of hidden hints about upcoming Apple products.
It didn’t take long for Mac and iOS prodigy Guilherme Rambo — a maven among software developers — to unearth some particularly interesting tidbits that may hint to an upcoming Apple Watch refresh.
Specifically, Rambo noted in a post published by 9to5Mac that new Apple Watch identifiers were discovered in the code of iOS 12 developer beta 2. Rambo noted that it’s not uncommon for Apple Watch identifiers to be discovered in iOS code given that Apple’s handset and wearable operate in tandem.
Apple Watch Series 4
The new Apple Watch identifiers found in iOS 12 beta 2 include Watch4,1, Watch4,2, Watch4,3 and Watch4,4 —w hich most notably are similar to the same group of identifiers that foretold of the Apple Watch Series 3.
Those identifiers were Watch3,1, Watch3,2, Watch3,3 and Watch3,4, Rambo noted, adding that there are also model number references present corresponding to the new devices, including MTUD2, MTUK2, MTX92 and many others.
Rambo went on to corroborate many of the reports we’ve cited in recent weeks, suggesting that Apple may be readying a new quartet of Apple Watch Series 4 models for a potential release alongside new iPhones — including the anticipated 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus — when they’re unveiled this fall.
As far as specifications are pertinent, Rambo corroborated earlier rumors that Apples next wearable device would feature a slightly modified design incorporating an OLED display thats roughly 15 percent larger — covering more area — than the Apple Watch Series 3.
It’s also been rumored in previous reports that Apple’s 5th generation wearable will feature some form of dedicated hardware health monitoring utility — be it an inbuilt EKG meter for measuring heart rhythms, a blood glucose monitor for patients with diabetes, and possibly even improved sleep tracking technologies.
Above and beyond that, Rambo noted, it doesn’t appear there are any other Apple Watch identifiers in iOS 12 beta 2, though he conceded that they could be discovered at a later time.
