We first heard reports around this time last year that the iPhone 16 Pro Max would gain a larger 6.9-inch screen. Although several other rumors supported this, it’s never been clear how much the physical iPhone would need to grow to accommodate the larger display.

After all, the display may be the most prominent feature on the front of your iPhone, but there are still bezels and frames to contend with. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen, but it actually measures nearly 7 inches diagonally. Ditto for the iPhone 15 Pro, which has a 6.4-inch frame surrounding a 6.1-inch screen.

That suggests that an increase to a 6.9-inch screen would see the physical dimensions of the iPhone 16 Pro Max grow to a hefty 7.2-inch diagonal. However, it’s unclear if the height and width would increase in equal proportions.

That increase also only applies if Apple changes nothing else from the current design. If it could slim down the bezels enough, the iPhone 16 Pro models could get larger screens without increasing in size.

Of course, getting those bezels down to a tenth of an inch is probably too much to hope for, and the consensus from leakers and analysts is that this year’s Pro models will grow by at least a bit. This also isn’t just about the displays; by all accounts, the iPhone 16 Pro will gain the 5x tetraprism camera and likely needs more space to fit that in. It’s widely believed that size was the main reason the 5x camera came only to the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year.

A Larger iPhone 16 Pro Max

A new leak is giving us a peek into exactly how much larger the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be compared to the current model. The good news is that it’s not as dramatic an increase as many feared.

An image shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Daniel of ZONEofTECH reveals a dummy model of the iPhone 16 Pro Max alongside the iPhone 15 Pro Max. No actual measurements are provided, but it’s easy to see how the new iPhone 16 Pro Max will be noticeably larger.

This assumes the iPhone 16 Pro Max dummy unit reflects the actual measurements of the real device. These molds are not provided by Apple; instead, they’re milled by third parties, often based on leaked specs, to help accessory makers get a head start on building cases for the new iPhone models. While there’s a good chance they’re accurate at this stage, it’s far from certain as there’s no way of knowing who created the dummy models or what measurements they were based on.

There’s enough evidence that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will both see increases in their display sizes to make this plausible. MacRumors shared last month that Apple is also working on new Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technologies to create even thinner bezels, but it’s unclear if this is for this year’s iPhone 16 lineup or some future devices.

We saw similar aluminum-milled casts shared by Sonny Dickson in early April that showed the entire iPhone 16 lineup. While no comparisons to the iPhone 15 were offered, the Pro models appeared slightly larger than their non-Pro counterparts, as the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to retain the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays.
