Sometimes the Apple rumor mill runs so fast we can get whiplash. The iPhone 17e hasn’t even hit store shelves yet, and we’re already hearing leakers talking about next year’s model, the iPhone 18e.

In this case, it’s not entirely surprising, as the latest news is a repeat of last year’s early iPhone 17e rumors — and they’re coming from the same source.

Just after the iPhone 16e launched last February, Weibo leaker “Fixed Focus Digital” who had been among the first to accurately predict Apple’s shift from the iPhone SE to its new “e-series” branding, shared how a new project code had already surfaced pointing to a successor.

Although Apple has never offered any insight into what the “e” stands for, Fixed Focus Digital claimed it was short for “economical,” displacing the “SE” which had always been believed to stand for “Special Edition.” However, while the iPhone SE models only came every 2-4 years, Apple’s decision to number the new model strongly pointed to an annual refresh cycle.

That made the leaker’s report plausible, especially since many other analysts expected the company would do the same, likely as a way of following Google’s lead with its A-series Pixel phones.

Still, it wasn’t until the iPhone 17e materialized last week that we had solid evidence that Apple will indeed be updating its new “economy” model annually. At this point, it’s fair to say that an iPhone 18e is a given, and a new Weibo post from Fixed Focus Digital confirms that the plans for it have been “finalized.”

That’s the opening bell for what will now undoubtedly be a full year of rumors and speculation about what to expect from the iPhone 18e. However, we wouldn’t suggest getting our hopes too high, as Apple has clearly decided that minimal year-over-year spec bumps are sufficient.

The biggest change in this year’s iPhone 17e was arguably the one thing that never should have been omitted from the iPhone 16e in the first place: MagSafe charging. Everything else was just raising the bar to 2026 specs: the A19 chip from the iPhone 17, the C1X modem from the iPhone Air (and a direct successor to the C1 from last year’s e-series model), and the expected camera improvements.

On the flip side, after months of back-and-forth debate about whether Apple would adopt the Dynamic Island for the new model, it ended up staying with the notch — and the same iPhone 14-era screen — making it an even further throwback to the iPhones of 2022.

If we had to guess, that’s likely to be the biggest change for next year’s iPhone 18e, as Apple has to either run out of iPhone 14 display stock or stop producing them sooner or later. The iPhone 15 has now been off the market for six months, and many expected those panels would grace the iPhone 17e, but there’s always next year. Beyond that, new silicon is a given; year-over-year A-series chip upgrades have become table stakes for Apple, and the C2 chip will likely be ready by next year, bringing mmWave support to Apple’s in-house 5G modem chips for the first time, although it remains an open question whether that will go into the e-series model.

There’s also the fact that next year’s budget model could share the stage with the standard iPhone 18. We’ve seen multiple reports from a broad range of sources, including The Information’s Wayne Ma, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and Fixed Focus Digital that all say Apple plans to split its release cycle this year, with only the iPhone 18 Pro models launching in the fall, followed by the standard iPhone 18 in the spring.

By all accounts, Apple plans to unveil its long-awaited “iPhone Fold” this fall, which could make the iPhone lineup a bit crowded, especially if it has a new iPhone Air to unveil at the same time. However, the jury is still out on whether the so-called “iPhone Air 2” will arrive in the fall or the spring; pairing it with the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e might make more sense than releasing it alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and “iPhone Fold.”
