5 Big Things That Were Missing from Apple’s ‘Unleashed’ Event

Apple’s October event unleashed some exciting new products ahead of the holidays, including the long-awaited AirPods 3 (now with spatial audio) and a powerful new M1 MacBook Pro with both 14-inch and 16-inch mini-LED displays. But, there were a few things we really wanted to see that Apple didn’t show off yet, either because they aren’t quite ready or because Apple’s not moving in that direction at all. So continue reading to browse five things we wish Apple had announced – and if we can expect any of them next year!
The 27-inch iMac
Apple released a new M1 version of the iMac back in spring 2021. It was super slim, came in a variety of colors – but had one significant issue: there was no 27-inch version. For users that love the 27-inch iMac and couldn’t imagine downgrading to a smaller screen, this was a disappointment. Many hoped that Apple would announce a companion M1 iMac with a 27-inch screen this October. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, which means we’ll have to wait until next year to see if one will appear.
macOS Monterey Release Date
Apple teased us with the new macOS Monterey update, which will include new FaceTime and screen-sharing capabilities, Apple’s Focus Modes for getting things done, and other welcome features that have already arrived with iOS 15’s beta. But, in an unusual move for Apple, no release date or beta download date was mentioned for MacOS Monterey. So they aren’t ready for anyone else to see it yet, which is a bit disappointing considering the big announcement.
An OLED iPad Air
Some rumors have pointed to an OLED version of the iPad Air, which would be an excellent complement for the Air while differentiating it from the mini-LED iPad Pro. The Air rumors also have it sporting a lot more Pro features, including LiDAR and 5G, keeping it somewhere between the iPad Pro and standard iPad. However, it looks like we’ll have to wait until at least 2022 for any more info about this.
A Larger HomePod
Apple’s HomePod mini was exactly what the HomePod line needed, a versatile little speaker buddy with a far lower price point for buyers interested in a smart speaker – and now it comes in multiple colors! But this leaves the room-filling original HomePod behind the times. Not only was it a pricey pick, but Apple has stopped selling it altogether. That leaves those who may want a larger speaker for better audio without an Apple product to turn to. We would have loved to see Apple announce a new, larger version of a HomePod at a more reasonable price. Maybe one is on the way for next year.
The New Mac mini
Apple revived the Mac mini line with an excellent model last year, the perfect option for those who prefer a more modular setup or take their Mac on the go, including M1 technology. However, we would have loved to see a new Mac mini with even more advanced specs, preferably something more in the Pro range designed for more complicated setups and a wide variety of accessories. Apple's done that before, but they didn't do it this time. We're hoping for next year on this one!
