Fans of Ted Lasso have something to celebrate today, as it appears that Apple’s hit series has officially begun filming in Kansas City.

That’s more or less in line with the schedule we heard in late May, but it’s still nice to hear confirmation, and it’s coming right from the top: Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Apple’s head honcho shared a teaser on X today to let everyone know that production has kicked off, accompanied by an image of four key cast members.

The photo shows Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins), Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) sitting around what appears to be a table in a diner. It’s unclear whether this is a scene from the show or merely a candid shot of the four cast members relaxing between takes.

A very short teaser video posted earlier today suggests that it’s a scene, although it provides relatively little context for it.

However, the start of production in Kansas City is particularly noteworthy, as the first three seasons of Ted Lasso were filmed almost exclusively in London, with outdoor locations primarily in the real-life suburb of Richmond and studio filming performed at West London Film Studios in Hayes.

The Kansas City setting has led to speculation that perhaps Leslie, Rebecca, and Juno have crossed the pond to persuade Ted to return to the UK. That would tie in with the end of season 3, when Ted left his job with AFC Richmond and returned stateside to be with his son, Henry. It also dovetails nicely into the overall arc of the new season, which Sudeikis has confirmed will see Ted returning to coach a women’s team.

Cook’s photo and the teaser video also confirm that Swift, Temple, and Waddingham will all be returning for season 4, which isn’t surprising, but also had yet to be officially announced. These are also logical characters to carry on into season 4; however, the focus on the new season being on a women’s team leaves us wondering how many other members of the old gang will be returning.

In March, an Apple press release confirmed that Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) are still part of the writing team for the new season. This makes it likely that we’ll also see them in their on-screen roles. In addition to starring as the title character, Sudeikis also serves as co-creator, executive producer, and head writer, alongside Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly, who were collectively responsible for bringing the series to life.

Ted Lasso was initially created to run as a three-season arc, and wrapped up nicely in 2023 with what Sudeikis called “the end of the story we wanted to tell.” However, nobody was quite willing to close the door on the possibility of a new story in the Lasso-verse, and considering that Ted Lasso brought record viewers to Apple TV+ and received a record-breaking 20 Emmy nominations and some substantial wins, it’s pretty understandable that Apple and Warner Bros have been eager to see it return.

There’s still no word on when season 4 will premiere, but with filming now underway, it could arrive as soon as late 2025 or early 2026.
