A former commune where Steve Jobs hung out on weekends in the early 1970s is up for sale. The owners of an Oregon farm claim the apple orchard on the property is the very same one that inspired Steve Jobs to name his company “Apple.”

While the claim about the naming of the company after an apple orchard sounds like good ol’ iffy real estate marketing, the claim is valid, and who wouldn’t like to make a few extra bucks off that bit of history?

As reported by Oregon Live, the “All One Farm” near McMinnville can now be had for the tidy sum of $5 million. Property record searches performed by the publication indicate that this is the first time the farm has been put up for sale since Steve Jobs’ college buddy, Robert Friedland, turned it into a commune in the early 1970s.

Friedland and Jobs were both students at Oregon’s Reed College at the time, and the pair reportedly had a shared interest in Eastern spirituality. So, while Friedland found followers to work there for free, Jobs hung out there on weekends, helping to work the farm.

Unfortunately, Oregon Live was unable to confirm whether the commune still exists, or why the current owners decided to give in to the crass commercialism of the man.

While the owners aren’t shy about dropping Steve Jobs’ name to gain publicity for the sale, they don’t appear to be using it to squeeze a higher selling price. The asking price is actually a bit lower than the market average in the area.

The All One Farms listing on the Windermere realtor site says the property includes 387 acres across five parcels, and the price includes a 4-bedroom and 2.5-bathroom main house totalling 5,260 square feet. The farm, located at 11890 S.W. Dupee Valley Road, outside McMinnville, also includes a large barn with a ballroom floor, an outdoor kitchen, and a greenhouse.

Since the farm hasn’t been sold since at least the 1970s, the only way to estimate its true value is to compare it to surrounding properties and their most recent sale prices.

In February 2025, a 350-acre property located approximately 70 miles away was sold for $6 million, $1 million more than the All One Farms asking price. Meanwhile, another property, approximately 165 miles away, which included 356 acres of farmland and a 1,668-square-foot building, sold in June 2024 for $6.5 million.

So, Steve Jobs Just Hung Out There on Weekends?

As previously mentioned, Jobs apparently loved working in the apple orchards so much that he was inspired to name his and Steve Wozniak’s fledgling computer company “Apple.” That story is apparently true, as co-founder Wozniak backs it up, saying Jobs came back from a weekend on the farm, presumably this farm.

Oh, there is one other little event that connects Jobs to the former commune, even if he didn’t acknowledge the connection until several years later, after he had left Apple.

You see, when Jobs wasn’t at the farm, he was communing with his partner, Chrisann Brennan, who later lived on the property.  Their daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, was born there in 1978, although Jobs was not present at the time of her birth.

In her 2018 memoir, “Small Fry,” Brennan-Jobs mentions the commune briefly but fondly. She reportedly said her birth took place on a farm and that she was named in a field. However, the property listing doesn’t mention the birth.

Jobs denied paternity of Lisa for several years, leading to a legal case and several media reports. Lisa and Steve Jobs eventually reconciled, and he acknowledged his paternity.
