The cost of owning and operating a car in the 21st century unfortunately includes data charges for your car’s embedded modem in addition to fuel and maintenance. And data isn’t cheap.
Thankfully, Chevrolet announced today that it will cut rates in half for those who opt to purchase a 4G LTE data plan for their in-car cellular service, with the cheapest option starting at $10 per month for 1 gigabyte.
The automaker is also offering other pricing tiers to suit the varying financial needs of customers, with 4GB running $20 a month and 10GB costing $40 a month (down from $80). There is also a flat-rate $150 option that provides 20 gigs over one year.
According to Chevy, which was the first automaker to provide 4G connectivity across its entire retail car portfolio, Silverado drivers gobble up the most data, followed by Suburban, Tahoe, and Traverse.
This deal is coming just in time for the upcoming long Fourth of July weekend, with AAA projecting that 36 million Americans will be driving to vacation spots.
“As more people embrace the technology, it brings down the cost of entry for all users,” said Laura Keck, OnStar Subscriber Marketing Strategy manager, in Chevy’s press release. “With these lower prices, we expect even more customers to use 4G LTE connectivity during this busy summer driving season.”
In-car data usage rates have risen steadily since 2014 and Chevrolet has been no exception. In the past two years, Chevrolet drivers have consumed 3 million gigabytes of data, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down.
