Apple’s hit racing flick, F1: The Movie, is speeding back onto IMAX theater screens later this week. The Brad Pitt star vehicle has been Apple’s biggest hit so far, taking in $552,512,903 at the time of this article. $85 million of that take has been in IMAX theaters, making it the biggest-grossing IMAX film this year.

F1 will continue its impressive box office run in IMAX theaters on Friday, August 8, 2025. Tickets are now available at select theaters, followed by a wider release to more IMAX and large-format screens on August 15.

F1: The Movie is officially Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing feature film to date. The film earned more than $55 million in gross ticket sales in 3,600+ theaters across the US. That marked the largest opening week box office for Apple. The film has earned over $552 million at the global box office to date, easily surpassing Apple’s previous best box office performance of $221 million, which it achieved with the theatrical release of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.

F1 has been a bit of a surprise at the box office. While it had been expected to perform well, the racing film has jockeyed for box office position with other summer blockbusters, including Warner Bros. Superman, which has so far grossed $559,310,209 at the box office

F1’s worldwide gross has so far been good enough for 8th place in the worldwide rankings, behind 1st place Chinese-made film Ne Zha II, followed by Lilo & Stitch in second, A Minecraft Movie in third, and then Jurassic World: Rebirth, How to Train Your Dragon, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, Superman, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts filling out the top 10.

The movie’s soundtrack, F1: The Album, has also performed well, with several tracks that have made appearances on Billboard’s Top Movie Songs chart.

While we previously reported that Apple is scaling back on big theatrical releasesF1 may be the exception that proves the rule, as Apple looks to focus on quality over quantity. Apple, which has dropped plans for a few other releases, appears to be focusing its attention (and money) on filming a single summer blockbuster tentpole film.

Apple pulled out all the stops for F1, both during production and before and during the film’s initial release. Apple built custom cameras to film the blockbuster and has promoted the film via haptic trailers and even notifications in Apple Wallet, which, unfortunately for Apple, only served to irritate many Wallet users.

While F1 will eventually make its way to Apple TV+ (likely after a few laps around the on-demand racetrack), the film is best seen on the big screen. The film was shot using immersive IMAX cameras at actual Formula 1 events, with Apple engineering special cameras to make sure the cockpit action fit for the huge IMAX screen. Top Gun: Maverick producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski were the driving force behind the film, along with legendary Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton.

Meanwhile, Apple apparently enjoyed its taste of Formula 1 Racing when it filmed F1: The Movie, as Apple has reportedly entered an even bigger race: the battle to secure US streaming rights for the Formula 1 circuit. Apple’s bid is reportedly in pole position, meaning F1 racing could soon join Major League Soccer on Apple TV+.
