Bic Launches What May Be the Weirdest iPhone Case of the Year

As someone who used to review iPhone accessories regularly, I’ve seen more than my share of odd cases, from over-designed luxury cases that cost nearly as much as the iPhone you’re putting into them to zombie kitten cases.
However, this week, Bic (yes, that Bic) announced what might be the weirdest case we’ve seen in a while. The limited-edition ”Hold the Phone” case is designed to let you carry one of the company’s EZ Reach Lighters strapped to the back of your iPhone.
In a fun twist, Bic has co-branded the cases — or at least the lighters inside — with themes inspired by Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart as part of their multi-year collaboration with the company.
Inspired by our multi-year partners, entertainment superstar Snoop Dogg and lifestyle innovator Martha Stewart, the two phone cases match the celebrity duo’s iconic lighter designs. The limited-edition accessory offers a functional yet fashionable way to hold your BIC EZ Reach Lighter to ensure your go-to lighter is always within reach and never misplaced this season.
While the two cases are identical in design, they vary in color. The Martha Stewart version is light blue to complement her lighter, while Snoop Dog gets a purple.
Bic isn’t selling these entirely with a straight face. It’s referring to the new cases as “the brand’s most recent cheeky creation, combining style and function for this season’s most stylish accessory.” However, we’re sure the company is more than happy to take your money.
In the announcement, Martha Stewart claims she keeps one of her own BIC EZ Reach lighter designs “in nearly every room of my home,” and is clearly enthusiastic that she can now “bring my favorite lighters with me on-the-go.”
While we suppose there’s still a particular market for such a thing, it’s an idea that feels like it would be more suited to the 1960s, when folks smoked cigarettes like they were a cure for cancer rather than a leading cause of it. Bic says it’s an “easy and safe way to light candles…and more,” so it’s not just for smokers, but we still question how many folks need to light candles so often that it’s necessary to have a lighter strapped to the back of your case. Maybe that’s the Martha Stewart angle.
Each case includes two matching lighters with a special 1.45-inch “extended wand” to keep your fingers from getting burned. Bic also recommends that you let the lighter cool for at least five seconds before popping it back into the case, and you may want to wait even longer if you’ve just finished heating up your iPhone from a game of Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
They go on sale today exclusively on Bic’s website for $50 for those who are so inclined, but there’s another strange twist: they’re only available for the iPhone 15.
When we say “iPhone 15,” we don’t mean last year’s models. Think “model” in the singular. The case isn’t being sold for the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max. Just the standard, 6.1-inch iPhone 15.
It’s worth mentioning that Bic’s idea also isn’t entirely novel. The design seems to have been inspired by Rhode’s Lip Cases, which lets you keep your favorite lip treatment strapped to the back of your iPhone. However, Rhode’s cases are also available for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models, with iPhone 16 Pro versions coming soon.
