Apple on Tuesday released iOS 13.1, the first major point release to the iOS 13 update. The company also released iPadOS 13.1 and tvOS 13. All three updates should now be available to download over-the-air.

  1. On iPhone and iPad, you can get the update by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. For Apple TV users, it’s System > Software Update.

Here’s what you should know about the new software updates.

What’s New in iOS 13.1

As mentioned earlier, iOS 13.1 adds back in several features that were pulled from iOS 13 — which was released last week.

  1. Some of those include new Automations in the Shortcuts app, which lets users create personal and home workflows that automatically occur when certain parameters are met.
  2. iOS 13.1 also includes Share ETA in Apple Maps, which lets users do exactly that. Anyone you share your ETA with will also be able to follow you along your trip.
  3. For iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max users, there’s a new feature that will let you prioritize AirDrop recipients by pointing your device at theirs.
  4. It looks like Optimized Battery Charging is here and working as intended, too.
  5. iOS 13.1 also introduces performance management for the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max to prevent unexpected shutdowns, though it can be disabled.
  6. The iOS 13.1 update also includes a laundry list of bug fixes, improvements and other under-the-hood changes. If you’ve been running into issues on iOS 13, the new point update will likely squash those bugs.

If you think it’s weird that iOS 13.1 is coming so soon after iOS 13, you aren’t alone. Apple seeded the first iOS 13.1 beta before iOS 13 was actually released — something that it’s never done before.

It isn’t actually clear why Apple released iOS 13.1 so early, but it may be due to a combination of shipment, tariff and buggy software issues.

What’s New in iPadOS 13.1

Apple also released the first publicly available version of iPadOS alongside iOS 13.

As we expected, the new tablet-focused software update is actually iPadOS 13.1 — so it should include the same improvements, fixes and features as iOS 13.1. It also brings Apple Arcade to the iPad.

Along with all of the basic functionality of iOS 13, such as Dark Mode and a swipe-to-text keyboard, iPadOS 13.1 also includes iPad-specific features like a new Home screen, additional multitasking gestures and Apple Pencil improvements.

What’s New in tvOS 13

Until today, there hasn’t been much word about tvOS 13’s release date. But while Apple didn’t mention it in advance, tvOS 13 was officially released alongside today’s other software updates.

The new tvOS update brings multi-user support and an updated Home screen to the Apple TV platform. It also makes Apple Arcade available for the tvOS platform.

Additionally, tvOS 13 introduces Sign In with Apple, new ocean-themed screensavers and picture-in-picture support.
