Apple has once again set a new bar at the Emmy awards, this time not only breaking the record for the most Emmy nominations, but also the most Emmys ever won by a freshman comedy series.

The hit new Apple TV+ series, The Studio, received a total of 23 Emmy award nominations. This not only beat the record 20 nominations set by Ted Lasso in 2021 (which had edged out the 19 received by Glee in 2010), to make it the most-nominated freshman comedy series in Emmy awards history, but also ties it with The Bear, which received 23 nominations in its second season, for the most-nominated comedy series overall.

The Studio also set a new record for the most Emmy award wins by a freshman comedy series, walking away with 13 awards, surpassing the 10 Emmys The Bear won in its first season in 2023. The previous record for that was held by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won 8 Emmys in 2018. Ted Lasso came close in 2021, with an impressive seven Emmys, including the award for Outstanding Comedy Series — a feat that’s only been accomplished by seven shows in TV history.

This gives The Studio the record for both the most nominations and most wins by a freshman comedy, but there’s more, since one of those 13 awards it received was that coveted one for Outstanding Comedy Series. This makes Apple TV+ the only streaming service or network to win this for two freshman comedies, tying it with NBC, which received the best comedy Emmys for the first seasons of The Golden Girls in 1986 and 30 Rock in 2007.

In addition to Outstanding Comedy Series, Seth Rogen won for Outstanding Lead Actor, Bryan Cranston won for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, and The Studio also received ten more top Emmys for writing, directing, production design, casting, cinematography, costumes, picture editing, music supervision, sound editing, and sound mixing.

With these wins, Apple TV+ has now surpassed the biggest freshman comedy hauls ever managed by Netflix, Hulu, or HBO, putting it in the same league as traditional Emmy heavyweights and underscoring its arrival as a force to be reckoned with in prestige television.

While it wasn’t as legendary as what The Studio managed to accomplish, Severance also picked up its share of Emmy awards for its sophomore season, with eight in total, including two for Britt Lower for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama and Tramell Tillman for Outstanding Supporting Actor, both of which were firsts for the actors. Merritt Wever, who guest-starred as Dylan’s wife, Gretchen, also received an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Severance also won Emmys in several other categories, including production design, cinematography, music composition, sound mixing, and title design.

Apple TV Plus Emmy nominations Slow Horses

Lastly, Slow Horses, which is about to return for its fifth season and has already been renewed for two beyond that, came away with an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for director Adam Randall for the fourth-season episode “Hello Goodbye.”

What an unforgettable, record-setting night for Seth, Evan, and The Studio creative team. It has meant the world to all of us at Apple to watch fans embrace this series, alongside the year’s most-celebrated drama, Severance, and the acclaimed Slow Horses. We are so appreciative of the Television Academy and applaud all of these artists who have shown the power of storytelling to bring people together.

Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of Worldwide Video

Collectively, Apple’s original films, documentaries, and TV series have earned 620 wins and 2,816 award nominations, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy Ted Lasso and historic Oscar Best Picture winner CODA. With Ted Lasso about to return for a fourth season, and The Studio likely to continue going strong, we’re sure we haven’t heard the last of Apple’s winning streaks.
