On Tuesday, Apple announced that it has officially launched its Self Service Repair and Genuine Parts Distributor programs in Canada. The programs offer individuals and independent repair professionals across the country access to the parts, tools, and manuals needed to properly repair Apple devices.
Apple launched its Self Service Repair program in 2022. The program provides customers access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and manuals. It allows them to repair select iPhone, iPad, Mac desktop, Mac laptop, Apple Display, and Beats models. Apple says the program is “intended for individuals with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices.”
“Expanding Apple’s repair programs in Canada is another milestone in our mission to make repairs easier and more accessible around the globe,” said Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare Service and Repair. “With today’s announcement, we’re taking a meaningful step toward broadening device longevity, reducing waste, and empowering both customers and repair professionals with quality, secure repair options.”
Apple also simultaneously launched its Genuine Parts Distributor program in the country, giving repair providers who do not have a direct relationship with Apple access to genuine Apple parts through wholesale distributors. Repair providers in Canada will now be able to purchase a wide variety of genuine parts for iPhone and iPad repairs — which includes displays, batteries, and charging ports — through MobileSentrix. The Genuine Parts Distributor program was launched in the US last year and across Europe in May, and has been used by thousands of repair businesses since then.
The new Self Service Repair and Genuine Parts Distributor programs join Apple’s existing repair options in Canada. Apple says it is continuing to expand its repair network. Currently, 80 percent of the Canadian population is within a 30-minute drive of an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) location, or an Independent Repair Provider (IRP).
Apple announced plans to roll out a new Self-Service Repair program in late 2021. The new repair program kicked off in April 2022. Initially, it covered only repairs to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. M1 Macs were added to the mix later that same year.
The program has expanded several times over the past few years to add more iPhone and Mac models, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that Apple finally added the iPad family, providing the necessary parts and tools for 2024 and later iPad models: the iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16).
The program provides do-it-yourselfers with free online access to official Apple Repair Manuals, allowing them to do a bit of research and decide whether they can handle conducting their own repair. An online self-service repair store allows them to purchase the required parts and rent the tools that are needed to conduct the repair.
As we reported when the program launched in April 2022, Apple’s self-service repair option doesn’t save you a lot of money over taking your Apple product to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, and in many cases, it’s more of a hassle.
However, the program can come in handy for things like screen replacement, since physical damage isn’t covered unless you have AppleCare+.
