Describing a better way to get high-quality audio from Smartphone speakers, a new patent that was recently granted to Apple suggests that the company might be implementing better sounding speakers in its future iPhones.

As you’re likely well aware, the majority of smartphones today feature relatively low-quality audio output. This is because, generally speaking, the housings of most Smartphones are so small and so thin nowadays, there simply isn’t enough room to accommodate dynamic and immersive audio components.

iDrop_ApplePatentUpgradedSpeakers_01In essence, the patent describes a way to incorporate the speakers deeper inside the housing of an iPhone, thus utilizing the acoustics of the housing as a sort of “speaker chamber” capable of producing better sound quality.

If you’re not understanding, below is perhaps a better, more technical explanation of what the patent entails, taken directly from the filing, itself, at the US Patent and Trademark Office:

A portable electronic device that provides compact configurations for audio elements are disclosed. The audio elements can be drivers (e.g., speakers) or receivers (e.g., microphones). In one embodiment, an audio element can be mounted on or coupled to an intermediate structure (e.g., a flexible electrical substrate) having an opening therein to allow audio sound to pass there through. In another embodiment, an audio chamber can be formed to assist in directing audio sound between an opening an outer housing and a flexible electronic substrate to which the audio element is mounted or coupled thereto. In still another embodiment, a barrier, such as a mesh barrier, can be provided in an opening of an outer housing so that undesired foreign substances can be blocked from further entry into the opening in the outer housing.”

Very interesting stuff, right? And while we’d love to see better sound quality as a feature of future iPhones, perhaps it might be more ideal if Apple simply implemented front-facing speakers as opposed to bottom facing speakers that are currently employed in the company’s iPhone line.

What do you think about all this? Would it make sense for Apple to create better sound quality through this “inner chamber” method?
Or would you rather see the company revisit the speaker design and/or placement, altogether?
