Apple now has two very different answers to the same question: what’s the cheapest Mac worth buying? That’s what makes the MacBook Neo and the Mac mini such interesting options. They both start at $599, but they are clearly built for different kinds of users.

The MacBook Neo is the simpler, more complete option. You open the box, set it up, and you’re done. The Mac mini, on the other hand, is the more powerful desktop. It gives you more Mac-class power for the money, but it’s only worth it if you already have the other pieces you need to use it properly (or you’re willing to spend more to buy them).

That’s what makes this really a question of what kind of Mac user you are. Do you want power or portability? Let’s break down these two Macs to see which one fits you best.

MacBook Neo Is Better Right Out of the Box

Compared to the Mac mini, the MacBook Neo’s biggest strength isn’t its chip or its price — it’s the fact that it’s a complete, all-in-one computer. You get the screen, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, speakers, battery, and charger all in a single device for the base $599 price. That makes it much easier to recommend to students, first-time Mac buyers, or anyone who just wants to buy a Mac and start using it without spending money on extra accessories.

That’s why price tags can be misleading when you’re comparing laptops to desktops. Yes, the Mac mini also starts at $599, but that price only covers the computer itself. You still need a display, a keyboard, and a mouse or trackpad. Depending on what you already own, you may also end up needing speakers, headphones, or a webcam. Suddenly, these computers aren’t actually the same price.

This is where the MacBook Neo becomes the better budget recommendation for most people. If someone says, I just need a Mac, the Neo is the easier answer because it’s actually a full Mac experience right out of the box. The Mac mini is better if you already have a good desktop set up, or can easily purchase one.

Mac mini Will Give You More Power for Your Money

If the question is which machine gives you more actual computing power for $599, the obvious answer is the Mac mini.

That’s because the base Mac mini uses Apple’s M4 chip — one of Apple’s most powerful chips to date — with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, and 120 Gbps memory bandwidth.

The MacBook Neo, by comparison, uses the A18 Pro, which is an iPhone chip. That doesn’t make it bad. In fact, it should be more than fast enough for everyone this computer was made for. But it does make the Mac mini the more serious performance machine by a pretty clear margin.

This becomes especially important if your budget Mac still needs to do more than basic web and schoolwork. Heavier multitasking, coding, media work, video editing, and generally more demanding long-term desktop work all favor the Mac mini. The Neo is built around affordability and mobility first, but it’s not meant to be a performance beast. The Mac mini is actually way better if you’re looking for raw power on a budget.

Memory and Storage: Mac Mini Is Better

The memory situation makes choosing the Mac mini even more obvious.

Apple’s base M4 Mac mini starts with 16 GB of unified memory and 256 GB of storage. The MacBook Neo starts with 8 GB of unified memory and 256 GB of storage. That means both give you the same starting storage, but the Mac mini gives you twice the memory at the same price.

Additionally, if you want more storage, the M4 Mac mini can go up to 2 TB if you’re willing to pay, whereas the MacBook Neo can only go up to 512 GB. Not only that, but having an external hard drive always connected to your Mac mini is way easier than on the MacBook Neo.

Sure, 8 GB of memory can still be fine for light workloads like browsing, documents, streaming, note-taking, and basic schoolwork. But, just like with the processor, having more RAM gives you more breathing room as your apps get heavier, browser tabs pile up, and your workload grows. That’s especially true on a computer you might want to keep for several years.

This is one of the biggest tradeoffs of the MacBook Neo. It’s good enough for the most casual of users, but the Mac mini is the more comfortable buy if you want a budget Mac that feels like it still packs a punch.

The MacBook Neo Is Still the Best if You’re Looking for Something Portable

This is the category where the MacBook Neo absolutely destroys the Mac mini, and it’s not even close.

The Neo is a real laptop. It has a 13-inch display, a built-in battery, a keyboard, a trackpad, speakers, and a webcam. You can use it in a classroom, on a couch, in a coffee shop, on a plane, or anywhere else without needing to think about power outlets every five minutes. For some, that kind of freedom matters more than chip performance.

The Mac mini is small, but small is not the same thing as portable. Yes, it’s tiny for a desktop, and you can probably carry it around with you anywhere. But it still needs to be plugged into a power source and external accessories to be usable.

So if mobility matters at all, the MacBook Neo is the better budget Mac by a mile. You don’t have to be a traveler for that to matter; even simple everyday flexibility, like using your computer in different rooms, makes the Neo the obvious choice.

Choose the Mac mini if You Need a Lot of Ports

This is one of the categories where it’s a good thing that the Mac mini is a desktop. In this department, Apple’s budget desktop is better than even the MacBook Pro models

Apple gives the Mac mini a much stronger port selection, with a total of three Thunderbolt ports on the back and two USB-C ports on the front, making it far easier to connect external drives, multiple accessories, and create a more professional desktop setup.

That’s a major strength if you work with external storage, use lots of wired accessories, or simply want a versatile computer with a lot of ports.

The MacBook Neo, by contrast, is much more limited. This budget MacBook only comes with two USB-C ports (one higher-speed USB 3 and one slower USB 2) and a headphone jack. No Thunderbolt ports and no MagSafe. That’s fine if your workflow is really basic, but doing something as simple as charging and plugging in another accessory might be a hassle. That means you’ll need to buy a separate hub if you plan on using something other than the charging cable.

Of course, we all want the convenience of having more ports, but it’s definitely not a deal breaker for students or people who casually use their Mac. So it’ll depend on what you need and prefer before you buy either of these computers.

The Mac Mini Is Better for People Who Want a Strong Desktop

If your Mac is going to spend almost all of its life on a desk, the Mac mini becomes a much better choice.

Most of the MacBook Neo’s compromises make more sense in a portable computer. But if your plan is to keep your Mac on a desk most of the time, those trade-offs will hurt a lot.

The Mac mini, by contrast, is designed exactly for that kind of environment. Stronger processor, more memory at base, better ports all make it a more logical choice for a long-term desk machine.

The MacBook Neo Is Better for Students and Casual Users

Apple clearly positioned the MacBook Neo toward education and first-time buyers. It has a lower price, an all-in-one setup, and a simpler, more approachable design overall.

It’s the kind of Mac you can recommend to a student, a family member, or someone who just wants something dependable for notes, web browsing, streaming, email, and everyday life tasks that they can do wherever they want.

The Mac mini can also be great for students if you need to work on heavy video editing or programming. If you just plan to do your homework, watch Netflix, and browse the web, then the MacBook Neo will be more convenient for you.

Which One Is Actually the Best Budget Mac?

The simplest answer is this: the MacBook Neo is the best budget Mac for most casual users, but the Mac mini is the best option for people who want power on a budget.

Choose the MacBook Neo if you want a Mac that is usable right out of the box, you don’t own any desktop accessories, and care more about portability and simplicity than raw performance. It’s the better choice for school, travel, and anyone who wants one purchase that covers everything at its most basic.

Choose the Mac mini if you already have a good monitor, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad (or you’re willing to buy them), and you want more power, more memory, and better ports for the same starting price. It’s the better choice if your Mac will mostly stay on a desk and you care more about computing value per dollar than about convenience.
