‘The Savant’ Finally Escapes Apple’s Content Limbo

It appears Apple’s thriller The Savant is finally back on the broadcast schedule after being unceremoniously pulled from the lineup last year.
Originally slated to premiere in the fall, Apple indefinitely postponed the series in September in the wake of current events, saying only that it would release the series “at a future date.”
Apple’s decision almost certainly resulted from the tragic assassination of conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk only two weeks earlier — an event that would have inevitably drawn real-world parallels to the theme of The Savant, which centers on a woman who researches and infiltrates online hate groups in order to prevent large-scale attacks in the real world.
After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone ‘The Savant.’ We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.

At the time, star and executive producer Jessica Chastain publicly disagreed with Apple’s decision to shelve her show, posting on Instagram that she believed the political climate made it even more relevant than ever.
I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honouring their courage feels more urgent than ever. While I respect Apple’s decision to pause the release for now, I remain hopeful the show will reach audiences soon. Until then, I’m wishing safety and strength for everyone, and I’ll let you know if and when The Savant is released.

Nevertheless, the show remained in a sort of broadcast limbo. Apple removed mentions of it from social media, leaving only the standard Apple TV Press page with a Premiere Date of “coming soon.”
While that page remains unchanged, Chastain has been true to her word on letting us know that the show is back on track. Over the weekend, Chastain confirmed to Variety that while she honestly wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day, she’s now confident that it’s coming.
Before it was like, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to see it,’ but now I can say, ‘We’re going to see it.’

Chastain herself didn’t have anything to say about a specific release window, but Variety’s Mark Malkin spoke with other industry sources who said that Apple is planning for a July release.
The show was reportedly in the can and ready to air before Apple pulled it last fall, so it’s really just a matter of fitting it into the schedule. The limited series has an eight-episode run and also stars Nnamdi Asomugha, Pablo Schreiber, James Badge Dale, Cole Doman, Michael Mosley, Dagmara Dominczyk, Jordana Spiro, Trinity Lee Shirley, Toussaint Francois Battiste, Hannah Gross and David Wilson Barnes. It’s not yet clear if it will be renewed for a second season.
The Savant isn’t alone in finding its schedule blown around by the changing political winds. Another political thriller, Tehran, only returned for season 3 earlier this year, despite having been filmed and ready to air nearly three years ago. Apple never officially commented on the reason for the delay, but it seems obvious that a show about a Mossad intelligence agent infiltrating Iran might be controversial after the geopolitical tensions of the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and the Gaza war that ensued. This was confirmed later in 2024 by the show’s co-producer, Israeli broadcaster Kan, which told Ynetnews that the show been “postponed by mutual agreement following the outbreak of the war.”
Apple also abruptly pulled The Hunt from its schedule last fall, although that one was for reasons that were legal rather than political. Only weeks before it was set to air, allegations of plagiarism surfaced, requiring Apple and the show’s producer, Gaumont, to postpone it while their legal department sorted out the details. Unsurprisingly, it seems legal issues are easier to work out than political ones, as The Hunt returned in March, less than four months after it was initially set to air.
