Why Is Apple Putting a Mysterious Magnetic Ring Inside of the iPhone 12?

Apple is always ready to impress with its latest iPhone models. Still, it seems the rumor mill spoils many of the surprises – and this year a steady stream of leaks revealed details about the iPhone 12’s hardware and the different models that Apple plans to release. It seemed like we were headed down the familiar “we know everything” path until a new leak brought everything to a screeching halt. 

According to Filip Koroy, aka EverythingApplePro, Apple has a trick up its sleeve.

New supply chain images and schematics suggest the company is embedding a ring of magnets inside its upcoming iPhone 12 models.

Why are these magnets there, and what do they do?

Nobody right now seems to know. However, the magnets may be used as a mounting point or as a wireless charging solution that allows you to “snap and charge” your phone.

Some leakers are claiming the magnets for inverted charging, while others, like Komiya, disagree. Komiya claims the magnets are not for inverse charging, but unfortunately, doesn’t offer any alternative theories.

It seems the best and brightest among the leaking community are stumped by these images.

We don’t know why Apple may be adding magnets to the iPhone. We also don’t know which models may be equipped with this mysterious feature. It may be something only available in the higher-end iPhone Pros to distinguish them from the entry-level models. It’s also possible these magnets were used for research and development and are not part of the final product. 

We will find out about these magnets and more very soon. Apple is expected to hold its iPhone fall event in early September.

The company likely will unveil four models of the iPhone 12. These may include the iPhone 4-inspired 5.4-inch iPhone 12, the entry-level 6.1-inch iPhone 12, the flagship 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the oversized 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The latest rumors suggest the manufacturing of the iPhone 12 is staggered with some models coming off the assembly line faster than other models. The company is working hard to get as many phones ready as possible, so it can launch them near the same time.
