Apple on Wednesday took the wraps off its next-generation 2018 iPhone lineup, unveiling a total of three gorgeous new flagship handset including the 5.8-inch iPhone XS, the massive 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max, and the all-new 6.1-inch LRD-equipped iPhone XR.
While we knew just about everything there was to know about the 2018 iPhones heading into this morning’s event, there were numerous revelations on stage — particularly pertaining to the stunning new iPhone XR — which left most viewers equally shocked and captivated. 5 Six Stunning Colors
Rolling into Wednesday’s event, it was all but established by analysts and major leaks that Apple's 6.1-inch iPhone would be available in at least three new color options — Red, White, Blue, and possibly others. Then, Apple wowed us with its vibrant and colorful bouquet of iPhone XR offerings. Colors include Blue, Coral (pink), Yellow, White, Black, and Product Red, constructed of 100% aerospace-grade 7000 series aluminum and equipped with glass-backs to enable wireless charging.
4 Liquid Retina Display
In a bid to keep building costs down, most reports had confirmed and corroborated that Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone would employ LCD technology in lieu of the more premium OLED displays on the iPhone XS and XS Max. While it was also rumored that Apple’s choice of LCD technology would be a new and highly-advanced form of liquid crystal tech dubbed MLCD+, the company surprised us again by announcing the first-of-its-kind Liquid Retina display (LRD) as an iPhone XR exclusive.
According to Apple, LRD is essentially an updated version of LCD technology which appears, ostensibly, to more closely emulate the stunning color reproduction of Apple’s Super Retina OLED panels. It also adds True Tone support and a 120Hz refresh-rate, while providing a contrast ratio of 1,400:1 compared to the iPhone X and Xs’ 1,000,000:1.
3 Vastly Improved Single-Lens Camera
Year after year, Apple’s new iPhone models feature the most advanced camera hardware available to at the time. And while the iPhone XR retains a seemingly unchanged single-lens camera around back, we were surprised yet again when Apple revealed the setup's impressive new spate of features.
As noted on stage, the iPhone XR’s single-lens camera is essentially the same wide-angle camera employed on Apple’s iPhone XS — a 12 MP sensor fearing Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). While its single-lens design means the iPhone XR lacks a telephoto lens like its premium iPhone XS counterparts, it’s worth noting that the handset will be able to simulate portrait mode photos using Apple’s advanced new software and Depth of Field settings.
2 Name Games
One of the biggest surprises about the iPhone XR is, well, the fact they actually named it the iPhone XR. Granted, rumors leading up to Wednesday’s event had suggested the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could be named the iPhone 9, or even the iPhone Xc.. We even heard the 'iPhone XR' moniker floated as a possibility — but, personally, I think we're all a bit surprised thats what they settled on.
1 More Power for Less
Most surprising, by far, is that Apple was not only able to pack its iPhone XR with a spate of next-generation technologies, including a TrueDepth camera, A12 Bionic CPU, and stunning edge-to-edge LRD display, but that the company was able to do so while keeping the handset's price within reach of many.
