Nexus-device owners have been getting a lot of goodies from Google as of late. Shortly after the Android Nougat OS was rolled out to Nexus devices, Google has announced that is releasing another perk exclusive to Nexus smartphones in the coming weeks.

It’s called the Wi-Fi Assistant and it is very useful, performing a task that many of us neglect or are too busy to do. Wi-Fi Assistant automatically detects and securely connects to free open Wi-Fi hotspots so you can keep your connection strong and your data overage charges to a minimum. Rather than scrolling through a menu full of encrypted Wi-Fi hotspots whenever you remember that you’re dangerously low on data, this feature basically keeps an eye out for free Internet and reminds you so you don’t have to.

While this feature was originally exclusive to Project Fi, Google will expand Wi-Fi Assistant to all Nexus devices across Canada, the US, the UK, Mexico, and Nordic countries. If you want to check whether your device has it, go to Android Settings > Google > Networking > and see if you have the option of switching the Wi-Fi Assistant on.

Upon activation, an icon will appear in the upper-right hand corner of your smartphone indicating whether you’ve successfully connected to a free Wi-Fi hotspot. When a potential hotspot is detected, the Wi-Fi Assistant prompts you to approve or refuse the connection.
