WWDC ’22 was one of the best Apple events in recent years. iOS 16 is a fantastic upgrade over iOS 15; I already have the beta and will write a review in a few days. macOS Ventura looks good, but as I told you before, it’s heavily focused on performance. watchOS 9 offers great health features, and while iPadOS 16 isn’t bad, I was expecting a bit more.
The redesigned MacBook Air looks surprisingly better than my sources and other Apple leakers expected. As I said before, it has a notch, but it’s not white, and neither is the keyboard, which I appreciate. This is the kind of moment where I love being wrong about some predictions.
However, I do want to share with you what Apple schematics look like, so here’s an example of a redesigned MacBook Air schematic for those who are curious. Anyway, I’ll probably buy this laptop. I love it, and that Midnight blue color is the best thing I’ve seen from Apple in years.
In contrast, I don’t understand the M2 MacBook Pro. It looks exactly like the M1 MacBook Pro; it has a Touch Bar even though the company claimed in October that “pros prefer physical function keys.” It has no notch, and it’s more expensive than the M2 MacBook Air. I don’t understand why someone would prefer it over the Air.
Like I told you, all of this is great, but what about the things we haven’t seen yet?
Mac Pro
Many people were expecting a Mac Pro at this event, but if you read our last article commenting on what was coming, you’ll see that the Mac Pro wasn’t on the list. Apple is still planning to unveil the Mac Pro this year, but since the new Pro Studio Display had to be postponed, so did the Mac Pro.
On the other hand, presenting an “M1 Ultra Duo” alongside the M2 might give the impression to those who aren’t nerds like us that the former is somehow worse than the latter. Still, I think we’ll see the Mac Pro at an event in September or October, although the situation in China might force Apple to postpone the release again.
Mac mini
Many people expected the Mac mini to be announced during WWDC, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. However, it’s true that this product has been ready for a few months now, and we should definitely expect it sooner rather than later. The fact that Apple hasn’t released it yet is mainly due to two reasons: The first is purely marketing related, and the second is the fear of not being able to handle the demand due to the current production problems Apple and its partners are having in China.
For these reasons, I don’t expect Apple to introduce the Mac mini before the end of 2022. But it’s not all bad news. I’ve seen the device, and I can tell you that it’s absolutely beautiful. So I’ve created some renders for you to see what it looks like. I know there are already renders available from Jon Prosser, but my sources believe there are changes that needed to be made to his renders. So here they are:
It actually reminds me of the first Mac mini. The top will be glass, although many news outlets reported that the material would be more like plexiglass.
As far as I know, this is the only color Apple plans to launch. Apple tried many different colors, and that’s why the media reported that the device would come in the same colors as the new iMac. I’m not saying it won’t be, but white seems most likely now.
Now let me tell you about the ports:
- On the back, there are four USB-C ports, two USB-A, a 10GB Ethernet port, and an HDMI port.
- As you can see, it connects to power via the same port as the iMac.
- It also has an SD card reader and an audio jack on the front, just like a Mac Studio, so it’s easily accessible to everyone, which is great.
As I said, I expect this Mac mini to hit the market sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.
I do have some bad news, though: some sources claim that this Mac mini will start at $799, which is $100 more than the current Mac mini, something that’s understandable given the current situation.
Apple Classical
Many people, myself included, expected Apple Classical to be announced last Monday. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and to be honest, I have no idea why. The software is ready, and all of my sources assumed that we would see Apple Classical at this year’s WWDC, but I guess that’s not the case. I asked my software sources what they thought about it, and, more importantly, when Apple Classical will be announced. As far as they are concerned, Apple Classical is ready, and if Apple decides not to announce it during WWDC, it will most likely come out as a press release sometime this year. Let us hope it will be announced as soon as possible.
There are many more things planned for this year, starting with iPhones, new iPads, AirPods Pro 2 and Apple’s new codec, new AirPods Max colors, and much more. I’m very excited for what’s left of 2022, and I can’t wait to see everything Apple has been working on.
