Apple first released its HomePod smart speaker at WWDC ’17. The device hasn’t received an update since, meaning it’s long overdue for a refresh. While we haven’t heard any significant rumors suggesting we’ll get a HomePod 2 at Apple’s September event, the fall keynote seems like a likely candidate for an announcement.
As far as what a next-generation HomePod could look like, no one is quite sure. HomePod is already one of the best-sounding smart speakers on the market, so audio enhancements seem like they could be less of a priority. On the other hand, a few past rumors indicated that the Cupertino tech giant may be considering a lower-cost “HomePod mini” device that could better compete with the smart speaker’s cheaper rivals.
