New to the Apple Watch? Be Sure to Do These 6 Things First

Welcome to the Apple Watch world. It's a beautiful place filled with many apps, complications, and tools that'll help you track your fitness goals, instantly check your notifications, and control many things without taking your iPhone out of your pocket. That said, if this is your first time, an Apple Watch can be a tad overwhelming. If you don't know where to start, or you want to customize your Apple Watch to make it your own, continue reading to browse the first things you need to do with your Apple Watch.
Adjust the Text Size
The Apple Watch's screen isn't the biggest there is, especially if you have the smaller 40mm version. Fortunately, you can quickly adjust the text on your Apple Watch later even if you didn't do it in the initial setup. You can make your text bigger and even bold. Or you can adjust the brightness, so it's easier to use your Apple Watch during the day or outdoors.
You can change any of these options whenever you want, so you don't make your eyes work harder for no reason. Here's how you can do it:
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap on Display & Brightness.
- Adjust the text size and brightness to anything you want.
- You can also toggle Bold text if you want to.
You can also change this right on your Apple Watch by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size. What's good about doing it on your Apple Watch is that you'll get a live preview to see what works best for you.
Get Familiar with Watch Faces
You've heard of them, but if this is your first time, you probably haven't played around with watch faces yet. A watch face is exactly what you think. It's a way to customize your Apple Watch by adding your favorite watch face from Apple's first-party options. You can choose the one that suits you the most and edit it with your favorite complications, but more on that later.
To change your Watch Face, all you need to do is open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap on the Face Gallery tab at the bottom.
There are a lot of watch faces you can choose from. Likewise, you can customize each watch face's appearance and complications within the Watch app. You can even create your own watch faces by using your favorite pictures or your Memojis too.
The best part is that you don't have to stick with just one. Remember that you can add several watch faces and change them on your Apple Watch's Home Screen by simply sliding from the edge to the left or right to switch between your watch faces.
Start Using Complications
If you are a new Apple watch user, then you probably don't know what a complication is. Contrary to what the name might suggest, a complication is actually a quick action button that takes you to an Apple Watch app. Like how you can tap on a widget on your iPhone, it'll automatically take you to that app. It can also show live information like the weather or the stock prices.
There are many complications to choose from, so you'll have to test which apps you use the most and which complications are available for the said app. Once you know which complications you want, here's how to add them to your watch face.
To change complications on your iPhone:
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap on any Watch Face at the top of the app.
- Tap on any complication you want to change.
- Scroll around and find the best complication you want to add.
Change complications on your Apple Watch:
- Press and Hold your watch face until you feel a haptic response and see a small animation.
- Tap on Edit.
- You should see Complications at the top. If not, swipe on your Apple Watch to the left.
- Tap on the complication you want to change.
- Scroll and find your favorite complication.
- Press the Digital Crown to confirm your changes.
Manage Your Apple Watch Apps
By default, your Apple Watch will install companion apps to any compatible iPhone apps you have installed. And while that's a useful feature, not only will it take up too much space with apps you don't want to use, but it may also slow down your Apple Watch over time. To disable this feature, do the following:
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap on General.
- Toggle Automatic App Install off.
Moreover, you can actually change your App View to make it look like a list that more people prefer.
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap on App View.
- Choose between Grid View or List View.
Finally, you can arrange your Apple Watch apps, so you have the most often used ones in the middle of your grid view. You can do this on both your iPhone or Apple Watch, but the iPhone option is way easier.
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap on App View.
- If you have Grid View selected, tap on Arrangement.
- Press and drag any app and move it to wherever you want.
If you want to do it on your Apple Watch, go to your apps by pressing the Digital Crown and press and hold an app until they all start to jiggle. Press and drag any app and move it around to where you want to.
Change Your Activity Goals
One of the main factors of the Apple Watch's popularity is how easy it makes it to track your fitness goals. It lets you set up your Activity goals according to your daily lifestyle and what you want to accomplish. The best part is, if you want to, you can change your goals right from your watch.
- Just go into the Activity app on your Apple Watch and scroll to the bottom.
- Tap on Change Goals and set your new goals.
- Tap on next to change the next goal.
Customize the Apple Watch Dock
By default, the Apple Watch's Dock will feature your most recent apps, but you can change it, so it shows your favorite ones. Here's how:
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap on Dock.
- Select Recent or Favorites depending on what you want.
- If you select Favorites, you can edit which apps to show.
- Tap on Edit on the top right corner.
- Then tap on the plus or minus icon to add or remove apps from your dock.
By the way, to access the dock on your Apple Watch, tap on the side button right below the Digital Crown.
