Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a legendary 16-bit RPG that still feels remarkably modern and well-paced to this day. The story moves quickly and lets the player make choices with consequences. The combat system is engaging without being overly complicated. And multiple endings encourage you to play it multiple times.

If you’ve played this game before, you’ll know how amazing it feels to have Chrono Trigger on your iPhone. It feels like you’re carrying a full console RPG in your pocket (which you are), but it’s been improved to fit the more modern hardware. The touch-optimized controls make turn-based combat comfortable, and the pacing makes it easy to play in segments.

You can complete a dungeon, save your progress, and jump back in later without losing your place. This makes it perfect for mobile, as many of us don’t have countless hours to spend on a role-playing game, and it lets you play in short bursts whenever you have a few minutes here and there.

If you’ve never played it, this is one of the best introductions to classic RPG design. Although it is a bit pricey (at least compared to other mobile games on the App Store), you won’t regret buying it as soon as possible. You can also wait, as Square Enix often has sales that drop the price, sometimes as low as 50%.
