Apple TV (2007) Will Lose iTunes Support This Year

Indicating that new iTunes security updates are on the horizon, Apple on Monday announced via the web that it plans to discontinue iTunes support for select “older devices” beginning May 25, 2018, which will prevent them from using the latest version of its popular digital music management software.

According to Apple’s announcement, impacted devices will include the first-generation Apple TV from March, 2007, in addition to Microsoft Windows PCs running XP or Vista, the company said.

“Starting May 25, Apple will introduce security changes that prevent older Windows PCs from using the iTunes Store,” the company said, adding that “If you have Windows XP or Vista PC, your computer is no longer supported by Microsoft, and you’re not able to use the latest version of iTunes.”

Likewise, starting May 25, “security changes will prevent Apple TV (1st generation) from using the iTunes Store.”

Apple noted specifically how its first-generation Apple TV device has been considered an “obsolete Apple product” for years now — and therefore, it will not be updated to support the impending iTunes security updates.

Apple indicated, however, that customers using Windows XP or Vista will still be able to use previous versions of iTunes on their PC — albeit without support from Apple. However, those who opt to do so won’t be able to download new content, or previous purchases on their XP or Vista-running machine.

Customers will therefore need to update their PC to Windows 7 or later and the latest version of iTunes in order to either make new or download previous purchases from the iTunes Store.

For first-gen Apple TV owners, Apple says that after the security changes take effect, customers will only be able to access the iTunes Store on second-gen Apple TV devices or newer.
