Apple’s iPhone 12 Enters Mass Production (Missing One Key Feature)

According to the latest rumor, Apple’s next-generation iPhone 12 has entered mass production this week. One of the last manufacturing steps before the handset is ready for its big retail debut.

Previously, Apple leaker Jon Prosser had said mass production of the iPhone 12 likely wouldn’t begin until early October.

Apple appears to be ahead of these guesstimates, producing the iPhone 12 on the same schedule as the iPhone X and XR. Both the iPhone X and XR were released in early November 2017 and late October 2018, respectively.

Prosser not only leaked details on the iPhone 12 production schedule, but he also claimed that the highly anticipated 120Hz ProMotion display did not make the cut. For some yet-to-be-known reason, the iPhone 12 currently being produced does not have this high-tech display.

Present on the iPad Pro, the ProMotion display provides smoother screen animations, better gaming performance, and improved user interaction.

We’re not sure why Apple may have removed ProMotion from the iPhone 12, but it may be the result of substandard battery performance. A power-hungry display and 5G connectivity may have been too much of a drain on the battery.

Apple may have been able to work around this power problem, but it wouldn’t be easy.

An earlier rumor suggested Apple may not be able to implement ProMotion without using a low-power LTPO display like the one on the Apple Watch.

Though Apple reportedly is working on this technology, a report from Digitimes says these LTPO-equipped phones won’t debut until 2021.
