Apple’s iPhone 13 may finally get a smaller notch, claims a new report from Digitimes. The slimmed-down notch is the result of a new Face ID system that makes it possible for Apple to reduce the height of the notch to make it less noticeable.

DigiTimes, citing the supply chain as the source for this rumor, does not elaborate on Apple’s change to Face ID. It’s unknown whether these changes affect only the design or bring new features to Face ID.

The next-generation iPhones’ Face ID system will see some design changes with the size of the notch at the top of the screen to shrink and their ultrawide angle lens upgraded from 5P to 6P, the sources said.

The new design integrates Rx, Tx and flood illuminator into the same camera module, similar to that of a LiDAR scanner in the back camera module, to enable smaller notch sizes, the sources stated.

This isn’t the first time we’ve discussed the iPhone 13 and the notch at the top of the screen. Earlier this year, MacOkatara pointed to supply chain sources that hinted at a smaller notch, while Apple leaker Ice Universe last year claimed a smaller notch was slated to arrive in 2021.

The Digitimes report also claims Apple is making changes to the camera modules used in its iPhone 13 lineup. The iPhone 13 will “continue to use the 7P lens module” found in the iPhone 12 series.

The iPhone 13 Pro models, though, will reportedly get a boost with a larger CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) that’ll deliver a significant improvement in resolution.

The non-Pro iPhone 13 models may get a slight bump in quality, sporting the CIS currently found in the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
