Apple is reportedly planning a media event at the Steve Jobs Theater on March 25, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The special event will apparently be focused on Apple’s upcoming paid subscription news service, BuzzFeed reported. The service, integrated into Apple News, will allow users to access paywalled content on a variety of news sites for a single monthly fee of $9.99.

That “Netflix for news” platform is rumored to include print media outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.

On the other hand, you probably shouldn’t expect any physical products to be unveiled at the event.

BuzzFeed’s sources indicate that the event is “subscription services focused” and that upcoming devices like AirPods 2 and an iPad mini refresh are unlikely to make an appearance. Presumably, that means AirPower and other iPads will be no-shows as well.

But there’s a chance that a news subscription service isn’t the only thing on the docket for the March 25 event.

Apple is known to be working on a video content platform that could include original TV shows and films, as well as a separate media subscription service that would allow unlimited access to magazines — just like the Texture app it acquired last year.

Past rumors have suggested that the original TV content platform could be launched this spring, which would line up with a March 25 event.

More than that, Apple is also said to be mulling a combined subscription bundle that could incorporate all of them together. In other words, that could include original Apple video content and news, along with Apple Music and iCloud storage tiers, all for one monthly fee.

It is worth noting that Apple is still reported to be negotiating the financial terms of its print media subscription service with publishers. A Wall Street Journal report today indicated that news outlets are hesitant to agree to Apple’s 50 percent revenue cut from the service.

Also, if the March 25 event turns out to be subscription-focused, it isn’t clear when new hardware will make an appearance.

Apple doesn’t typically hold more than one spring media event, though it could this year. It’s also possible that new iPads, AirPods and AirPower could be released at WWDC ’19 or via press release.
