Netflix Will Stop Working on These Smart TVs and Roku Devices Dec. 1st

If you own an older Samsung smart TV, it may be time for an upgrade – especially if you use Netflix.

Netflix will stop working on these older Samsung smart TV models and other streaming devices beginning Dec. 1 due to “technical limitations,” a Netflix representative told CNET.

But while Netflix corroborated the report, it was actually a Samsung support page update that first broke the news.

“Due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be supported on 2010 and 2011 TVs beginning on December 1st, 2019” the notice reads.

While Samsung didn’t release an official list of specific models that are impacted, it’s probably safe to assume that the company means that all 2010 and 2011 smart TVs will lose support.

You can view our list of assumed Netflix-incompatible devices here.

Samsung and Netflix both note that users will see a new pop-up alert on their devices notifying them of the upcoming compatibility change.

What Should I Do?

If you haven’t seen anything on your device so far, you’re likely fine. But even if you have an impacted device, that doesn’t mean that you’ll need to rush out and buy a new TV.

There are plenty of current devices that support Netflix that you can use along with your Samsung smart TV — including an Apple TV set-top box, a Roku or Amazon Fire TV streaming device, or a gaming console like an Xbox One or PlayStation 4.

Do keep in mind that some older Roku streaming sticks will also lose support to Netflix on Dec. 1 due to those same technical limitations, according to an October report by CordCutters News.

According to Roku, only the first two Roku models will lose Netflix support. Those devices originally debuted in 2008 and 2011.

If you happen to be in the unfortunate position of having an impacted Samsung smart TV and an impacted Roku, you can pick up a new Roku Express for about $30 on Amazon.

At this point, it doesn’t seem like any Apple TV models are losing support for the streaming service. But we’ll update this page if that does turn out to be the case.
