Steve Jobs Alive and Hiding in Egypt? Doppelgänger Sparks New Theories

Tech Register

A picture of a Steve Jobs lookalike has sparked conspiracy theories that the late Apple cofounder and CEO is actually alive and in hiding in Egypt.

The person in the image, which surfaced over the weekend, does bear an uncanny and even spooky resemblance to Jobs. The man in the photo is even going barefoot, as Jobs himself often was when he was brainstorming new innovations.

As you might expect, the image itself has gone viral. One Redditor posted the image to the r/pics subreddit with the title “Steve Jobs hiding in Egypt after faking his death.”

Some commenters noted that the resemblance even stretches to the little details, such as the way the man in the photo is sitting. “This guy looks too much like Steve Jobs to be so random,” one commentor wrote.

It’s, of course, hard to separate those who sincerely believe this could be Jobs from those who are simply trolling. It’s also not clear where the image originated from.

The earliest person to post the image appears to be a Cairo-based social media director named Ahmed Basyouney, who jokingly said that the image depicted Jobs getting coffee in Egypt.

On the other hand, some have pointed out discrepancies with the Jobs lookalike. One eagle-eyed Redditor noticed that the doppelgänger isn’t wearing an Apple Watch. That’s surely a sign that the man is not, in fact, Steve Jobs. (Another Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, is admittedly a fan of the Apple Watch.)

This is not the first time that there has been a conspiracy theory that Jobs faked his own death and is now living abroad. Back in 2014, a selfie posted to Reddit sparked claims that the Apple cofounder was incognito in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jobs, 56, died in 2011 of complications related to pancreatic cancer. The person in the photo is simply someone who looks like Jobs. But due to the fact that Jobs was uniquely legendary and eclectic among public figures, some have noted that this particular fringe theory may be ever-so-slightly more believable than others.

“Idk man. I’m not very into conspiracy theories,” one Redditor noted. “But Jobs would be crazy enough to actually do it.”
