Creating a custom haptic vibration on your iPhone allows you to personalize the way your device responds to certain actions, like receiving a call, a text, or a reminder.

This can be especially useful for distinguishing between different types of notifications without having to look at your iPhone. Imagine knowing who’s calling by the vibration in your pocket. Custom haptic vibrations are also pretty fun to make. Here’s an overview of how you can create a custom haptic vibration pattern on your iPhone.

Next, scroll down to Create New Vibration and tap it. This is where the fun starts.

Tap the screen to begin creating a vibration pattern. Holding your finger down creates a longer vibration while tapping creates shorter vibrations. Combine long and short touches to create your own unique pattern.

Once you’ve created a vibration pattern, you can play it to make sure it’s perfect. Tap Save at the top right of the screen. You’ll then be prompted give your custom pattern a name.

After you save and name your pattern, you can assign it to a specific type of notification or to an individual contact.

To set it as the haptic for all notifications of a specific type:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Select a type of notification such as Ringtone, Text Tone, or New Voicemail.
  4. At the top, select Haptics and choose your newly named vibration from the Custom section.

To assign your new haptic to a specific contact for incoming calls and/or texts:

  1. Open the Contacts app or Phone app.
  2. Choose the contact you’d like to set a custom haptic for.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Select either Ringtone or Text Tone depending on which one you want to set.
  5. Tap Haptic. Your newly named vibration will appear under Custom.

Creating custom haptics can make it easier to recognize different notifications based on the vibration patterns you’ve set. Use it to identify your favorite contacts or your most common alerts. Give custom haptics a try. If you keep your phone in your pocket or on your desk, it might be both fun and useful.
