According to a report from the Korean website The Elec, Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup may feature the same LTPO display technology used in the Apple Watch. These upgraded displays may open the door for longer battery life and always-on capabilities.

Apple’s LTPO technology is being manufactured by LG, which is ramping up its factory production to meet Apple’s future demands.

LG Display will expand the production rate of its organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel factory lines dedicated to Apple… The LTPO equipment being placed in the factory lines will be for OLED panel supply to ?iPhone? next year, while the ones after May will likely be for panels for iPhones of 2022.

Display analyst Ross Young believes this LTPO technology is crucial if Apple wants to add 120Hz ProMotion technology in its future displays.

The LTPO technology would conserve power by lowering the display’s refresh rate when the device is inactive or during light usage.

Earlier this year, Apple was rumored to be working on both LTPO technology and ProMotion for its iPhone 12 lineup, but those reports never panned out.

LTPO technology is nothing new for Apple. The company currently uses LTPO displays in its Apple Watch Series 5 and Series 6. This allows the Watch models to have an Always-On Display while maintaining the Watch’s 18-hour battery life.

Apple won’t be the first to bring LTPO to a smartphone. Both the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Z Fold 2 already use similar technology to adaptively change the refresh rate of the phone’s high refresh rate OLED display.

The Elec report claims Apple will add the LTPO technology in the higher-end iPhone 13 models, similar to the LiDAR camera in the Pro models of the iPhone 12.

Apple is expected to continue to release four iPhone 13 models, just like it did with the iPhone 12.
