Camera companies have a big smartphone problem; Apple and other tech giants continue to integrate more powerful cameras and image-processing software into their phones, and because of this, people have even less reason to purchase a standalone camera. After all, the best camera is the one you happen to have on you at that critical moment when you need to snap a photo.

This trend has hurt camera makers badly enough in their pocketbooks that they’ve started to adapt and respond in creative ways.

Nikon, for instance, has announced the D500, a 21-megapixel APS-C DSLR that’ll run you $2,000. For that amount, the high-end camera delivers extra on performance. It can shoot up to ten frames per second and record 4K video– something your iPhone 7 Plus can’t do yet.

What sets the D500 apart, other than the fact that it’s arguably the preeminent APS-C camera on the market, is that it comes with Snapbridge, meaning you can tether it to your smartphone. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy to continuously maintain a connection to your phone, even when your camera is off. You can even remove the camera’s batteries without cutting the connection.

That means that you can easily access every hi-definition photo and video you capture on the D500 from your iPhone via the Snapbridge app. Once you select the shots you like, it’s simple to transfer them to your phone, edit, and upload them onto Instagram or the social media platform of your choice. You have the option of transferring full-res pictures onto your phone, though that would take a while, or importing 2-megapixel versions instead.

Finally, you can set the Snapbridge app to automatically transfer every photo taken on the D500 to your phone, making the bridge between your smartphone and high-end camera even more seamless. You can now take a great photo with a superbly crafted Nikon and share it with your Facebook friends within seconds. Nikon has made strides to integrate its products effortlessly with your iPhone, and the benefits are apparent.
