One of the many exciting new features baked right into Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, is the exclusive dual-lens camera module around back. Boasting not just one, but two 12 MP image sensors, Apple’s newest, highest-quality imaging hardware — while not exactly the DSLR quality that was originally hyped up — is nevertheless a powerful imaging set up that’s sure to entice and tickle the fancies of many — from professional, freelance photographers, to the casual photo snappers among us, alike.

Even despite the sheer hype and excitement surrounding Apple’s highest-end camera sensors, however, some might be quick to wonder, “well, what on Earth is so special about having two cameras, anyways?”

If you’ll recall correctly, back at the company’s iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2 unveiling event earlier this month, Cupertino executives showcased what was promised to be a forthcoming feature that would enable the application of different DSLR-quality image capturing tools, including a slew of “bokeh” and depth of field effects.

A fairly universal feature of most newer standalone DSLR cameras, Apple’s Portrait Mode — aka “the bokeh effect” — is achieved on the company’s iPhone 7 Plus (and only on the iPhone 7 Plus, unfortunately) when the secondary camera sensor works synergistically with the primary sensor to create various zoom and depth of field settings.

These settings are applied to the image in order to create the signature “blur” effect found on some traditional DSLR photos; while what remains in the foreground (usually a person or a discreet object) is zoomed into focus, so as to appear crisper, sharper, and more detailed.

As I mentioned, this awesome new feature will be rolling out to owners of Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus for free later on this fall, when the Silicon Valley tech-giant officially releases its incremental iOS 10.1 software update. And while many of you non-iPhone 7 Plus users out there might be feeling like you’ve just been prodded with the short end of the stick, there is a bit of good news coming to us this morning, folks!

Enter ‘FabFocus’ for owners of Apple’s iPhone 5s or newer. ‘FabFocus’ is a forthcoming app that will be launching soon on the Apple App Store. Using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, ‘FabFocus’ will utilize an advanced facial recognition protocol to keep people (or things) that appear in the foreground, focused in; while at the same time, blurring the area that the app determines to be the background of the image.

There’s currently no word on a release date, or pricing, for that matter; however, insofar as what this app can apparently do, I’d wager it’s only safe to assume the app will come with a nominal price tag. Be sure to keep your eyes open for when ‘FabFocus’ actually does touch down, and check out the samples above to get a feel for all the app can do in the interim.

Are you going to download ‘FabFocus’? Let us know in the comments!
