New Leaked Video Reveals the iPhone 12 Launch Is ‘Just Days Away’

At this point we pretty much know that Apple is planning to launch its new 2020 iPhone lineup sometime next month — Apple itself confirmed this to investors when it said that the iPhone would be arriving “a few weeks later” than usual — but what’s been far less clear is exactly when in October the so-called iPhone 12 may actually arrive.

Rumours in that regard have been all over the place, some pointing to October 13th, but other suggestions are ranging from just after Columbus Day all the way into late October, and we have little doubt the strong indications that at least some iPhone models won’t come until November have probably also thrown off the predictions.

However, now a leaked video that’s been obtained by MacRumors suggests that we could actually see Apple’s unveiling come even sooner, with Marc Allera, the CEO of British Telecom, which represents two the U.K.’s biggest carrier brands, telling the company’s employees that the actual iPhone launch is “just days away.”

We are just days away from Apple’s next major launch, a 5G iPhone, which will be a huge boost for 5G.

Marc Allera, CEO, British Telecom

As Allera notes, British Telecom has been working very hard to become Apple’s number one partner in Europe, and the video is clearly intended to be a call to action to inspire the company’s employees to that end.

In fact, Allera is joined in the video by none other than Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, who lauds British Telecom’s EE brand for becoming the first carrier to bundle almost the full range of Apple’s services — not only Apple Music, but also Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade — with its smartphone plans.

While Cue’s appearance is brief, and of course he doesn’t actually say anything about the iPhone launch itself, the presence of a senior Apple executive definitely lends more credence to Allera’s own comments.

Beyond the strong suggestion of an early October timeframe, however, the video doesn’t appear to provide any insight into more specific dates, nor which models will be coming and when.

The most reputable rumours we’ve heard from sources such as Bloomberg have indicated that Apple plans to launch two new standard “iPhone 12” models right out of the gate — a direct 6.1-inch successor to the iPhone 11 will be joined by a 5.4-inch “iPhone 12 mini” — while the usual pair of “iPhone 12 Pro” models, which will gain an increase in size to 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, probably won’t come until November.

A dissenting supply chain rumour from Digitimes, however, has suggested that Apple could launch the two 6.1-inch models first, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max coming later, but this has also been contradicted by the oft-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo with a report that it’s actually the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini that’s slated to go into production first.

Regardless of what order Apple actually plans to launch the new iPhones in, however, it’s all but certain that it will unveil all four of them at the same time, and it’s now sounding like this could be an event held much earlier in October than we had originally anticipated (despite Allera’s “days away” comments, although an event next week isn’t completely out of the question, the fact that Apple hasn’t sent out any press invites would seem to mostly rule that out).

This year’s iPhone event will likely follow the same approach that Apple took in 2017 and 2018 when it launched earlier models with a staggered release schedule; the iPhone X was announced in September alongside the iPhone 8 lineup, but didn’t actually go on sale until the first week in November, while the following year it was the iPhone XR that was pushed out into October following the September announcements of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Apple will probably do the same this year, announcing all four iPhone models outright and specifying pricing and availability at the end.
