After months of rather inconsistent reports and speculation surrounding the company’s development of a new low-cost 13-inch MacBook Air model, a new report out of Taiwan this week is proclaiming that Apple’s new MacBook Air computer(s) could arrive as soon as the end of the third-quarter of this year.

Citing Apple’s looming exit from a “transition” period of declining Mac sales, Taiwan-based market research firm, TrendForce, published the report this week suggesting that Apple is readying to release at least one new MacBook within the September or October timeframe.

“The second quarter was the transition period when Apple was preparing for the releases of the upcoming new MacBook devices for the year,” TrendForce writes. The firm “expects MacBook shipments to again post a large QoQ increase in 3Q18, as Apple will be releasing a new MacBook Pro at the start of the quarter and a new MacBook Air at the end of the quarter.”

The MacBook Pros referred to in TrendForce’s report are the refreshed 13- and 15-inch models which Apple discreetly announced via press release early last month at the beginning of Q3.

The new MacBook Air, meanwhile, which was originally predicted by the famed and ever-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this year, is slated for debut towards the end of Q3.

If TrendForce’s sources are accurate, this would peg the new MacBook Air model — or models? — for a launch at the end of September, or early October, at the latest.

According to previous reports, Apple is hoping the new model will prompt an influx of new Mac users, especially in the education sector. To that affect, the model has previously been rumored to cost as little as $799.

Of course, even if TrendForce is accurate in its reporting — and Apple does in fact move ahead with launching its ultra-affordable MacBook soon — in the meantime, anything could change or possibly even delay those plans, so consider this report with a grain of salt too.

Either way, it’s unlikely Apple will announce the new model at its September 12th fall products event, but rather, via a press release similar to how it introduced its 2018 MacBook Pros last month.
