2019’s New iPhones Are Expected to Ship with 18W Fast Charging Tech

Apple this year may finally make a long-awaited change to the accessories it packages with its iPhones, a new report on Monday suggests.

The Cupertino company is largely expected to debut three iPhone models this year, each a direct successor to the devices in the 2018 iPhone lineup. And all three are “likely” to come with an 18W power adapter and a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box, according to Japan-based Mac Otakara.

If that rumor turns out to be true, it would be the biggest change Apple has made to its bundled iPhone charging accessories since the switch from 30-Pin to Lightning cables. Here’s why it matters.

Benefits of 18W Fast Charging

As far as notable benefits, the primary boon would be the ability to use USB-C fast charging without buying any separate accessories.

Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 has had USB-C fast charging capabilities, which means that a user can charge those devices up to 50 percent battery life in just 30 minutes — with the proper charging accessories.

Despite the addition of the feature on the iPhone 8, Apple has continued to package its latest smartphones with the 5W power brick and Lightning cable that it has for years. That has forced current iPhone owners to buy separate, standalone accessories to access the built-in feature.

A Lightning to USB-C cable would also allow iPhone owners to plug their devices into their MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air devices without needing to buy a separate cable. Apple’s new notebooks have used USB-C ports since 2015 and later.

Previous Rumors

This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen this rumor for the 2019 iPhone lineup, so it’s a bit more probable that it could turn out to be accurate.

It’s worth noting that a previous Mac Otakara rumor from January suggested that the 2019 iPhone lineup will still come with the aging 5W power brick. It appears that the site has changed its tune on the matter since then, however.

Apple first started packaging new iPad Pro models with an 18W power adapter last year. Interestingly, rumor had it around that time that Apple would bundle its 2018 iPhones with those power adapters. That, of course, didn’t turn out to be the case.

It’s also possible that the Lightning to USB-C cable is a stepping stone toward switching the iPhone lineup over to USB-C entirely. Though Apple probably won’t make that switch this year.

In addition to new charging accessories, the iPhone XI lineup is also expected to sport two-way wireless charging and indoor navigation features. The iPhone XI and iPhone XI Max are rumored to upgrade to a triple-lens camera setup, while the iPhone XR successor could feature a dual-lens setup.
