An early teardown of this year’s iPhone XS shows that Apple has made few changes to the device’s internal setup.

The teardown, carried out by FixjeiPhone, reveals that Apple has largely reused the internal design of last year’s iPhone X flagship in its 5.8-inch 2018 handset.

If you look at the internals in last year’s iPhone X and the iPhone XS side-by-side, you’ll notice that there aren’t too many differences. Which makes senses, since the iPhone XS is more of an incremental update with no major form factor changes.

The most obvious difference is the battery. While the iPhone XS sports the same L battery as the iPhone X, this year’s handset features a new single-cell battery (as opposed to last year’s two-cell battery).

Upon closer inspection, the single-cell battery appears slightly smaller. And according to recent regulatory filings, it is — 2,658mAh compared to the iPhone X’s 2,716mAh. Despite the smaller capacity, Apple has extended the battery life marginally on the 2018 device.

Another small detail is the iPhone XS camera module, which appears to be slightly larger than the iPhone X’s. This makes sense, too. Apple bumped up the sensor size of the iPhone XS camera by about 20 percent, which will help it capture more light.

It’s worth noting that the new camera hardware doesn’t just impact the internals. The iPhone XS camera hump is larger than the iPhone X’s by about a few millimeters. As noted in a previous article, this means that iPhone X cases won’t fit perfectly on the iPhone XS and vice versa.

FixjeiPhone’s technician also notes that the disassembly process for the new handset was more difficult. Mostly, that’s because of the new watertight seal binding the display to the rest of the device.

While it makes disassembly tougher, that new seal has resulted in an increased IP68 dust- and water-resistance on Apple’s premium OLED handsets this year.

This is only one of the first teardowns of the new iPhone XS. We’ll likely see more in-depth disassemblies of the new devices in the coming days, which could reveal other incremental changes to the device’s internals.
