Power Issues? Apple Now Offers Free Repairs for Select iPhone 6s Devices

Do you own an iPhone 6s or an iPhone 6s Plus? If you do, your device is likely feeling a bit senescent these days (but there may be good news). Apple has launched a new program offering free repairs for select iPhone 6s models experiencing power issues.

There are, of course, a few caveats. If another part of your iPhone is broken, you’ll have to get it repaired separately before bringing your phone in for this specific problem.

Apple is limiting this program to iPhones that won’t power on correctly and iPhones released in a specific timeframe.

As long as you own an impacted iPhone 6s or 6s Plus with power problems, you can check and see if your phone can be repaired.

1. First, you can sign up for the repairs by accessing this Apple support page.
2. You’ll need to type in the serial number of your iPhone, and Apple will tell you if it’s eligible or not.
3. You can then choose which repair option you’d like, including bringing your phone into a local Apple Store or mailing it in for repairs. 

Why Exactly Is Apple Doing This?

It’s a unique scenario that involves a component in 6s/6s Plus devices that can fail without warning.

That component leads to power problems, which usually leads to affected iPhone models not turning on at all. Apple is keeping quiet on which component exactly is causing this problem, but it’s easy to see that it must be an important one.

We also know that it’s a component that was only used in the final shipments of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus models. The models that qualify for these repairs were made between October 2018 and August 2019.

It seems likely that a factory flaw made its way into this particular iPhone shipment, and Apple is doing a quick recall to fix the issue as quietly as possible.

Since no later iPhones seem to suffer from this problem, the issues were apparently resolved in time for the newest releases. On the bright side, you know what to do if your iPhone 6s suddenly stops working.
