iOS 9.3.1 has been released and is meant to fix all of the bugs found in the original iOS 9.3 release. According to the change log, iOS 9.3.1 fixes apps being unresponsive after tapping and long pressing on links in Safari.

Apple acknowledged this issue earlier this week and said a fix “would be coming soon.” Fortunately for us, they wasted no time. This bug was also activated when users with affected devices interacted with links via the Mail app, the Messages app, Notes app, and some social media apps.

These problems have been caused by Apple’s implementation of “Universal Links” which were introduced in iOS 9. Other issues with the original release of iOS 9.3 caused activation issues for several older devices. If you are using an older iDevice and haven’t updated to the newest version of iOS, this new update should include a fix for an issue where certain devices couldn’t be activated if the user forget their iCloud password.

Aside from these changes, there are no other major updates in iOS 9.3.1. It is available for all devices that support iOS 9 including iPhone 4s and newer, iPad 2 and newer, iPad Pros and minis, and all fifth and sixth generation iPod Touch devices. You can download the iOS 9.3.1 update by connecting your iPhone or iPad to iTunes on your computer. You may also get the update by:

  • Opening up Settings
  • Tapping on General
  • Clicking on Software Update

The update looks like it relatively small which furthers our belief that this update does not include anything major. The size of the update will vary depending on the wireless carrier, but the average size seems to be about 35MB.

Important updates to iOS 9.3 include Night Shift, updates to Notes App, Touch ID, Apple News, and more. Read about all of the best features in our article here covering iOS 9.3.
