A few weeks ago, we originally reported that Apple’s forthcoming line of ‘iPhone 7’ handsets might potentially touch down featuring an exciting new color option.

Indeed, similar to how the Cupertino-company released its iPhone 6s, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and 12-inch MacBook in Rose Gold, Apple tends to surprise us from time to time by bringing new color options to the table.

However, an even newer rumor that we caught wind of just this morning appears to tell a slightly different tale.

According to the popular Japanese blog, Macotokara, citing its own writers as sources, the forthcoming iPhone 7 might instead be released boasting a “considerably darker” color option than deep blue, or even the current-generation Space Gray — perhaps even along the lines of a full-on jet black.

Having originally debuted as an optional color for Apple’s iPhone 5s back in 2013, the company’s Space Gray hue is currently the darkest available — although it’s certainly by no means the darkest to date. Apple’s iPhone 3G, 3Gs, 4, and 4s, if you don’t recall, were all formerly available in a pitch black.

It’s worth noting, also, that Apple’s Space Gray color has varied quite substantiality from one device to the other. For instance, the Space Gray metal employed by the Apple Watch and 4th-generation Apple TV are considerably darker than that of the 7,000 series aluminum currently employed on the iPhone 6s and iPad.

Macotokara’s report appears to converge quite nicely with pervious rumors that alleged the introduction of a darker color option in place of the Space Gray many of us have come to know and love. However, those same sources — which have apparently seen the actual iPhone 7 color options in person, admitted that they’d initially misconstrued the deep blue for a deep black.

In addition to the new, considerably darker color, Apple’s iPhone 7 handsets will be launching in the same colors we’ve been treated to for the last three generations — Silver/White, Gold/White, and Rose Gold/White.

The timeframe for the iPhone 7 launch is still expected to be the same as it’s been in the past — with a slated unveiling set for a yet-to-be-announced date sometime later this September.

What we know about the device, thus far, is that it will supposedly maintain many of the design hues of its predecessor, while ditching the standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, possibly beefing up in thickness due to a potentially enlarged battery, and, in addition, a bunch of new internal components to make the most use out of that sweet new operating system that’s likely to be unveiled at the same time.
