Rumor has it that Google may release their own non-Nexus phone later this year. The tech giant is reportedly negotiating with various mobile providers about the device, according to an article published Sunday by The Telegraph, a British newspaper.

Google is already behind some of today’s most popular phones under the Google Nexus brand. But up to this point, Google has collaborated with companies like LG and HTC to manufacture these phones, CNET wrote.

Apple and Google already dominate the mobile operating system market, with Android and iOS being featured on the vast majority of smartphones sold today. But a Google-branded phone would mark the first time the company went head-to-head with Apple on the hardware front, according to CNET.

But some have cast doubt on whether the reports from the The Telegraph are legitimate.

“The Telegraph’s actual rumor boils down to almost nothing of substance, merely an assertion that Google is in discussions with mobile operators,” David Ruddock of AndroidPolice wrote.

Ruddock went on to write that the source could have heard about a “Google phone,” and erroneously assumed that it would be a non-Nexus device.

AndroidCentral also questioned if a non-Nexus phone would even be helpful for Google’s market share.

Google has not released any statement on the matter.

In the meantime, Google is still working on various other smartphone projects, and is continuing to partner with other tech companies.

The tech giant is reportedly working on Project Ara, a modular, customizable smartphone that is set to be released sometime next year, and a project that is distinctly separate from these reports of a Google-branded phone, CNET wrote.
